But if you are whizzing past at 550 knots with your arse on fire you are not going to see any of this.

More to the point, if you're whizzing along at 20,000 feet you're not going to see any of it.

Ground object animation and AI really only matters for movie makers and ground attack missions. If you're doing a BoB sim that aspect of the air war isn't so important. It's even less important if you're doing a 4th or 5th generation fighter sim.

Many fiddly bits I've proposed are nothing more than invitations to feature creep and should be ignored as serious suggestions. The real value of what you're doing is "making the tools to make the tools." Provide the mechanisms which eventually allow fans to easily "fill in the gaps" and trust that others will build on your framework.

Practically, that means making it easy to add little features to the game rather than adding them yourself.

Good point IMHO  ]thumbsup[, or else it would be too much work for one person to make everything himself for a new flight simulator.

Yes I know I am a masochist.

This is a massive project, but I am making everything open source with all tools so hopefully something will come of it

Let's hope so!
It would be a shame if all your work would be wasted.

Added ground dust effect when gun fires as suggested

Think it needs a new particle system though

This is looking good!  If we could import IL-2 1946 assets into this, it would look amazing.

This is the Spitfire IX c (Multi) him from IL2

The process is currently very slow and painful. I am doing it by hand until I understand it and can write code to automate the process.

Really need hires textures and normal maps.

Specular maps and since UE5 uses physical based rendering, it would be nice to have a map that combines metallic and roughness into the specular map.

AH I see! I didn't realize this is actually aircraft from IL-2 1946!  I am impressed!

When it comes to the first time for anything, it is always a pain in an ass.  You will eventually get this.

Looking good!  From what I understand, you are currently testing each features from IL-2 1946 in Unreal Engine, then make the automatic conversation software that would import IL-2 assets?

That's the plan, but it is not trivial

To get the physics to work, you need a skeleton.

My design is for solid bones connected by rigid joints to hold all the aircraft parts in place. So when the aircraft gets destroyed you can just break the joint at the correct place and the aircraft falls apart as you would expect.

Then place physics elements for everything else

So the propellor is a thruster, each wheel has a matching physics wheel, each wing section is an aerofoil (which I will have to add to the physics system in UE5 as none exist), landing gear have springs, etc.

Then I will need to create a tool to do all of this

At the moment the ONLY way to do this work is with Maya, and I don't believe any of you have £3500 spare to buy yourself a copy
