Unfortunately I am not a part of the Map team.  If you are working with PAL or Monty, they should have let you know.

As of now the maps included are roughly 12.3GB in 50 SFS files, and the list is enormous, including WW1, East/West/Mediterranean/Pacific fronts, and others. (These are distributed in 5 downloadable files.)

UD/dzz

I could probably just wait but I'm too impatient: Will all the maps "load.ini" files be available in folders so we can change the sky effects as offered by tbauchot and vpmedia? Or will we have to disassemble the various SFS files to get to these?

Just like the rest of the gang here I'm really looking forward to this.

A fair queiston
From what I gather is the maps are for all
Dawn of flight covers WW1
World at war covers from around 1936 to 1946 and a few biplanes did see service
Jet war covers from 1948 to now along with a few WW11 birds making it to a point.
Now they are probley using a slector switich like Bravo's holy grail where all three modules are there and all you do is change settings and pick the one you want to fly.
Now it might be differant from what I have gathered from what I have read and what I would likly do if I did this massive piece of work.
Now one more thing if and when they release this piece of work read the manual and pay strong att. to the install!!!!!

No, the maps are packed in SFSs.  With ease of installation and stability some loss of flexibility has to be sacrificed.  However, like all other super packs, you will be able to install other mods on top of it.  The major problem with that is when updates come, it will assume that you have the original installations and previous packs, the team cannot account for the almost infinite number of user-modded installations out there.

There will be ways to modify maps the way you stated with custom mods, however you would need to get the load.ini files, which are packed in the SFS files.  Whether using the traditional SAS IL-2 Loader, Benitomuso/PAL's Total Modder, when the content of the MOD folder is loaded, it goes by "computer" alphabetic order, and whatever the first instance of a file is encountered, that is the one that is loaded first...  so if you have duplicate files, the one loaded in a directory beginning with "!" for example, would be loaded before the one in a directory beginning with "g"...  But that assumes that the file was loaded before the content an SFS that may have a conflict.  Unfortunately there is a lot of trial and error there and that is why this pack is being designed carefully to account for this.

With that in mind, we can't guarantee that everything will be absolutely perfect... but we are trying to make it as smooth as possible on the users.

No, each module is a separate universe.  So no Me-262 vs. SPADs... sorry.  As the number of complex objects in IL-2 grows, it runs more sluggish and unstable.  The 3 separate modules offer the capability of using each on top of a common IL-2 and map infrastructure, but you need to decide which major era you want to "boot" the IL-2 engine on.  It is as simple as selecting the configuration in the IL-2 Loader, and bam... nothing else needs to be done.  Besides, there are some major differences in the modules:

- WW1 does not have Command and Control, and it also does not have Radio Communications.
- Ground objects are unique to the era (no V-1s and V-2s in WW1 for example)

The only warning is that you should create a quick batch file to delete the ".last.quick" file from the "Quicks" directory before you change modules... it loads the last QMB configuration in QMB, and if you try to load a WW1 scenario when you last played DOF but now are running WAW or JTW, it could be a CTD.

But unfortunately you will not be able to fly those IL-2 P-40 missions in WW1, even though the mission selection will show them available.

One of the suggestions I have for the team is to eventually completely isolate each module, so that even mission content and campaign content would be only available to the proper era, but we are not there yet.

I want to make sure people understand that it is that simple to switch between modules.  You literally can go to IL-2 loader, select DOF, play a few WW1 dogfights, then exit IL-2, now select WAW, re-start IL-2, jump into a Stuka, get shotdown by a Spitfire, decided you had enough, exit IL-2, then select JTW, jump into an F/A-18, and shoot down half-a-dozen Bears or Badgers with your air to air missiles... then start over, any order you want...  all on top of a single installation of IL-2.  Pretty awesome.

Don't you think that it would be a good idea to build this option right into the IL-2 Selector? Let's be honest. A lot of players do not know the difference between a batch file and a white elephant. Plus, if you think it's such a great idea and will be used that often, maybe one more reason it should be built into CUP.

WE keep hearing that CUP is striving to be as user-friendly as possible. Do you really want to see a hundred topics starting with..."My game crashed when I opened my QMB."?

about time to learn and memorize a small lesson.
is it user friendlyness? or is it "helping users understand the very first steps of proper mod use"?

Aviar

This is nothing new.  People who installed a modded plane and used it in QMB, then uninstalled it and then tried to use QMB again have experienced that... it is a known issue.

Of course we are trying to make it as easy as possible for the users, but it is impossible to add everything.  A little bit of a give and take relationship between the development team and the users needs a middle ground somewhere; so when the time comes, we request the users to do a little due diligence, not a lot, just a little...  and I think that deleting a file, if applicable, fits within a reasonable expectation.

It really is easy enough to just go there ([IL-2 root directory]\Quicks\) and delete the file (.last.quick) manually.  Create a shortcut, and there you have it.

In truth I am not sure who actually wrote the IL-2 Selector, so I'd hate to say it should be easy to implement.  But either IL-2 Selector or Total Modder would be good applications to have that feature.

On the other hand, consider the alternative.  If it became a reality, once the feature was enabled, chances are there would be a hundred topics starting with... "QMB does not remember last setting/mission anymore..."

:D

It has been put together in a way that it should be somewhat 4.13 ready, however, we will need to see when 4.13 is released.  (This is from information contained within the current Draft Manual for CUP.)
