Escort Fighters
« on: February 28, 2015, 11:47:03 AM »

Hi all

Is there a way to "tie" the fighters escorting a bomber stream to the stream in the FMB so that they don't go tearing off leaving the bombers undefended if an enemy fighter shows up, i.e. stay close to the formation?

Any help would be appreciated

Assuming you are the flight leader just order them to rejoin, otherwise try to set more waypoints close to each other tying the fighters to the bombers they are intended to escort. Usually it works but, AI's are semi-retarded entities by nature... :P

To command the Zeros to escort the bombers all we do is select each fighter waypoint, click 'Target ---> Set' and attach the green crosshairs to each corresponding bomber waypoint. Don't get confused with the ESCORT 'Target Objective' - remember that the target objectives are simply 'goals' to complete the mission and award the player points for their completion. Target objectives allow you to accomplish the mission, but they don't tell the AI what to do.  The 'Target ---> Set' button 'attaches' one AI plane to another in a context-sensitive way: in this context the fighter flight will escort the bomber flight to which it has been attached.  By attaching all the waypoints we ensure the fighters will escort their bombers for the entire mission.  The fighters will weave and turn to stay on station with the bombers in a very satisfying fashion.

I don't know any other method beside that, I hope it helps you ;)

Best Regards,

Hi T,

you could have a look at this post and see if it helps:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,24051.0.html

As Oscarito mentions, multiple waypoints are needed to try and manage the AI (as much as it can be managed at least!  :P ).

A general principle to keep in mind is that, in my experience, every AI flight, at every waypoint, 'forgets' what it was doing and defaults to the 'behaviour' appropriate to the next waypoint.  So 'Target ---> Sets' have to be attached at every waypoint (plus one) where you want the behaviour to occur.

Hope it helps.  :)
