B-17 mod
« on: March 25, 2015, 06:08:19 PM »

Hello,
I'm new to this forum and just bought IL-2 1946. Can someone please tell me the best mod available to fly the B-17, and possibly even man some of the gun positions in the plane? (I'm only interested in single player at this point.)

I did try to do a search in the forum, but I can't make much sense of all the results.

Thanks!
-James

Welcome to the forum, James.
Let's get started.
If this is the first time you want to mod the game, and you don't know what to do, so this is my suggetion :)
First, Install the IL-2 1946 stock, version 4.07.
Then, install this: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,38443.0.html
It will upgrade your stock game to the newest version 4.12.2.
Now install the mod activator for your game. Without it, you can't mod your game. This is SAS's ModAct 5.3 for v4.12.2 game: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,37662.0.html
Read the thread carefully, it's very helpful. There is a mod called AI Flyable in that thread, it will make all of your AI stock planes controlable, B-17/24/29... Superb! :)
After install modact, now you can mod your game, adding new plane, new map, ship and everythings :)
Read this thread to know how to install them: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,35719.0.html
Have fun :)

Another question before I even start. Will these mods work with the Steam version of the game?

Well I was able to get all this working without any problems. Steam had already updated IL-2 to 4.12.2, so I just pulled it out of its buried SteamApps folder to a new folder and made a direct link to il2fb.exe. That seems to have effectively "de-steamed" it.  ;)

I then downloaded and installed ModAct 5.3 and AI Flyables Pack 5.30, then activated with JSGME.exe.

It was all very simple and I am now able to fly the B-17! Thanks so much everyone for the information.

One last thing.. Is this "old" mod (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,593.0.html) suggested by Mick worth the install if I've already installed the AI Flyable Pack 5.3? Just want to make sure I wouldn't be overwriting a newer better mod, with something older as that thread seems to be from 2009.

Thanks!

this mod never was adopted for 4.12 afaik.
When I tried installing it to my 4.12 MA5.30
I had no problems running it so far ...
apart from a very old B-25 cp as stand-in cp
and, more important, no bombardiers BombSight..  :o

Hopefully some modder will adopt it (Stefan?).. ;)

Instead I would recommend to install some mods like:

B-17 & B-24 Ball Turret 3d improvement by Jeronimo, here:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,25142.msg259058.html#msg259058

the beautiful HSFX cockpit cutout and available for 4.12 MA5.30 here:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,45599.0.html

activate jsgme "Cowling Engines & Prop by PA_Jeronimo".

also maybe from interest: Jeronimos Wheels mod:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,34533.0.html

in the end your Modact 5.30 B-17s can look like this  ;):

I'm really confused now. What cockpit is this then? (This is what came with the AI Flyables Pack 5.30)

Why can't I post an image here?? It keeps saying "Sorry, you are not allowed to post external links"

Gerax

I to tried to follow the link to the HFSX cockpit as I don't believe I have it. However I get an error message saying something like " you do not have access to this page" and a blank page showing. Could you check the link please?

Regards
