WIP - Olonets Isthmus
« on: March 31, 2015, 01:11:40 PM »

About a month ago i decided to reinstall IL-2, after nearly two-year break. And here is my new project - map of Olonets Isthmus (area in Russian Karelia between lakes Onega and Ladoga) in 1:1 scale. This is my first time trying to make IL-2 map.

Map covers the area of Svir river and Finnish/Russian frontline between autumn 1941 - summer 1944, during this time it remained virtually static.

We already have the huge ag_kt_Karelia map, but my intention is to choose a smaller area and make more detailed and more historically accurate map, using both Finnish and Russian topographical maps as a source. One of the biggest things that needed to be corrected was the upper reaches of river Svir, radically changed in 1952 when Upper Svir Hydroelectric Station in Podporozhye was completed, also creating the large Ivinsky Razliv Reservoir. Based on this map, i have tried to recreate river Svir as it looked during the war. Otherwise, lakes and rivers are based on Google Maps data.

Final map will contain at least 12 airfields, 7 Finnish and 5 Russian. Currently map_c is nearly complete, and i'm trying to practice making map_T.

Some screens, no textures yet:

Oknevas made an interesting dam in his Donbas map which I also used in my South Ukraine map for the Zaporozhye dam over the Dnepr.

Thank you for all your positive comments. :) I decided to stretch the map a little horizontally. In the east, it now covers the shores of Lake Onega and town of Vytegra, and in the west Lunkula airfield, important Finnish airfield during the early stages of the continuation war.

Here is the current map_C, only some lakes in the east are still left to be done.

Lately i have mostly been collecting source material. I already have pictures of the most important airfields, for example here is the Finnish main airfield in Olonets Isthmus, Nurmoila.

And the main Russian airfield, Mergino.

I have also found pictures of Finnish 1:20k topographic maps covering most of the important areas around river Svir.

Here for example, town of Lodeynoye Pole and airfield:

Hello!

I just noticed this thread so I want to inform that I am creating a new 1:1 Karelia map which contains Karelian Isthmus and also Olonets Isthmus! Kapteeni has created earlier the AK_Karelia, too, but that map contains very many mistakes and also map_c (coastlines) is not exact. It needs a huge job to edit all the coastlines from this front's map. I have done it on last winter and it took at least one month... :)

Karelia is now under Online test with my Lentolaivue 32 squad mates and it works very well, we just dogfight over Nurmoila airfield and Syväri river. I am now editing terrain textures (almost done), adding historical airfields (almost done) and populating towns (Viipuri almost done). If you need refereence material (for ex. maps or aerial airfield photos) from Olonets Isthmus or any other help, just ask me! ;)

Here's my navigation map and couple of screenies from that terrain:

Map contains over 20 historical grass airfields made from aerial photos from 1938-1945:

Viipuri town is almost done:

Kanttori, Your environment looks very nice and inviting, making me want to fly over it!  There's something mysterious about those cold northern forests that draws me to them.  I'm also still waiting for someone to make a map of the Tikhvin region, southeast of Lake Ladoga.  But yours looks really nice.
