Hi there !!!!

Is it possible to modify Kokoda airfield in a way that AI aircrafts can complete a take off or a landing without
crashing into the cliffs all around ?

Well
if anyone else wants to do some work in PNG  :D
I have finished with the actors.static for FNQ I added another mission at Lockhart River near Iron Range.
Just working on 4 new textures for Cape York Peninsula and refining rivers.
The last task I will do is add some reefs around Torres Strait and Great Barrier Reef

About two more updates from me over the next little while  :D

I plan on making some changes (hopefully improvements) to the map but I want to wait until Kirby has finished his work.  Two people changing things at the same time can be a disaster.

Jimmy99, I will look into your request when I start making changes!

´

Oh that´s  cool, you are doing a Great Barrier Reef?
Will we see sharks in the water?

Perhaps you could use some of my Reef texture skins for those. I have some hammerhead sharks swimming around in
some of my Island reefs and sand corals :D
It was a little test I did for Bombsaway many months ago, but I never posted for anyone else.
Never been used by anyone.

For those that want to do extra work.  :D
In PNG I have just changed the airfield textures to two original textures
brown for allies, green for Japanese.
I am ONLY messing with some new textures in Airfield and City (load.ini)
I am NOT messing with any of the lowland to country textures.

The work that I am doing is on map_T painting new textures in FNQ in fmb+
For map_c I am also soon making a rivers layer and a shallows/reefs layer with two additional new map_c tables.

I have finished the actors static work for FNQ. If you are just populating additional actors static updates would not mess with the work I am doing.

Max Tiger sharks were more common in the region but occasionally hammerheads were sighted as well  ;D

Jimmy99, a little update on my efforts with the Kokoda Airstrip.  With minor changes, I can make it so that up to 4 fighters can lineup on the runway and take off as AI without crashing.  The bad news is that none of them can land there!  There is just not enough room down in the bottom of that bowl where the airstrip is so that the AI can land.  I can land manually but even that is difficult.

Luckily, I found a topographical map of that area and a photo that shows the airstrip and surrounding area.  There was much more room in real life than we have on the map.  For instance, the Mambare river is very near the northern end of the airstrip on our map.  Actually, the river wasn't that close at all to that northern end of the runway.  Also, the mountain range is much lower in the immediate area of the airstrip in real life and then gets higher farther away.  Since I've never created a map from scratch, I'm certainly no expert but most of this may have to do with the 1:2 scale of the map.

Anyway, I can fix the mountain range by lowering the surrounding mountains but that will require significant changes to the Map_T.tga file.  I don't mind doing it but it will have to wait for Kirby to finish all of his texture changes first.

I've just noticed that AI cannot land without crashing on the all-important Lae airfield, because of a knob directly behind the runway (they can take off towards the sea).
By the way - while you guys are working on this great map, could you possibly make a 1942 version, without the big Nadzab complex and Finschhafen airstrip?

Lagarto, verified as you stated.  The hill behind the strip makes AI landing impossible.  I will take care of that!  Takeoff and landing away from the sea works just fine.

As far as making a 1942 version of the map, I'm willing to help do that as long as the creator of the map (Tomcat_Zombie) approves!  If so, you will need to let me know if there are any other required changes you know of (in addition to the two you referenced above) to make it more 1942, since I am not familiar enough with the New Guinea/Australia area at that time.  I'm not sure how much reference material is available for that specific time.

Thank you Dennis for looking into that matter. Correct me someone if I'm wrong but I'm fairly sure that in 1942 the only airfields in the Huon Gulf area were the two Japanese bases at Lae and Salamaua.
I would possibly add the Gasmata airstrip on New Britain:

By the way, some of the best memoirs from the PNG area are those of B-25/A-20 strafers; heartily recommended: "The Grim Reapers" by John Henebry and "Air Combat At 20 Feet" by Garrett Middlebrook.

I'm sure the Iron Range complex was around 43 onwards I'll check just to be safe.
Bombers would have used Mareeba further south (Atherton Tablelands)/ Horn Island then land at Horn Island or Coen before the Iron Range complex was built.

It's a pity we don't have Cook Town.
