Markham River Yacht Club
« on: April 24, 2015, 10:39:46 PM »

Closed for the duration...  Sorry!   :D

This is a bit of a test.  Expanding on the painted river method I was using in my Rabaul 1944 project.
As you probably know, Il-2 only does one kind of water per map.  So showing a filthy, silted river right next to the gleaming Pacific ocean will never work with the default settings.

Below are some shots of a different method.  Very early days and all textures subject to complete change of course.
I know many people may not like flying over a river that is depicted by landscape texture alone, but I thought I'd put it out there to see if I'm on the right track.  As always, all threats, encouragement and proposals of marriage welcome.

  ;)

Bee!!! This is very well done and usefull work. I love this delta rivers. Try to look to Khalkin Gol map, for example. There is only one really contrastic event between large fields with only grass. Chalkin delta river basin. Can you make this realistic textures for this map? Its only small.... ;)

Holy crap Bee  :D
Are you making this from a texture?
If so it would ease a lot of river pain and misery  :D (at times)
Just to add my 2 baht just some other colours of sand (dry river bed) and a very muddy brown.
You just have to think of the Mekong river here (bordering Thailand ) it is brown and a very dirty river.

Yeah, I got the colour wrong (see below) when I darkened the river mud, but its easy to fix as the original is still backed up on a different photoshop layer.  I was more concerned for the moment with getting the pattern seamless and making sure that the whole thing might work in principle.  It will probably take up four texture slots to complete it.  One for the straight portion running roughly southeast to Lae.  A curving one, plus a delta and an east/west texture should do it.  So far its working well with the "-2" entry in the load.ini   So far only three comments out of more than 150 views though, so perhaps the overwhelming response is "meh..!"

Looks great, definitely not a meh from here.

You mention Lea, do you have a map that contains Lea? I started one, got to MapC part, and could not go any further, (Noob) {unfortunately what was done is on a seized HD, along with a map of Southern Ontario/Niagara falls/Northern Buffalo.}

"So far only three comments out of more than 150 views though"
Good reason to put +1 icon in the forum, there have been many comments I agree with, but to make a post saying that is like spamming IMHumbleO

I think it looks great Bee but as was said a more murky look would be
an improvement.

Wish I wasn't so badly colour blind.  Green and brown look the same to me.  Not sure if this is any better...   :-[

Bee, maybe you need several different colors; more brown for flatland, slow delta rivers, and dark green for fast mountain streams and rivers. Either way, this looks great and beats the hell out of what is available now.

Talking from one artist to another, I personally believe this second version is perfect. No need for any more painting.
It is a keeper. Use it on your maps.
Bee, You do have great artistic vision.
Congratulations!
