BTW, I plucked out the effects (out of the files.sfs) from 4.13 and cobbled them together with effects from Gurner (no classfiles) - all works ok in my CUP so far! Not sure if this is wise but thought i'd try anyway? Seemed to be a lot of new stuff in there thats wasnt in Gurners?

I see you have hit the nail on the head there Mike....  ;) and to extrapolate from your cartoon, I think it is time we let go......  :D :D :D :D :D

even though it is done with the best intentions I am sure, when I see "sticking plaster or trial and error" posts like this, I despair .......  :(  This "quick fix and ignore the wider consequences" is what has caused endless issues over the past few years and seriously set back modding.

All those incompatibility issues never needed to be and they should not have been in the first place, but meanwhile the ship ran full steam against the cliffs and it might be too late to turn the tide already.

On your point of a stable base, I am not sure I would wish to go back to 4.10, but would be happy to stick at 4.12 now (as we have a lot of stuff in there as well as the CUP development) and then seriously concentrate on bringing all mods that were made for previous versions up to that standard. I believe that it is also closer to 4.09 (for those old rebels  ;)) and that way we would have a unified base to work from. Then we can start to finally call the tune, and not dance around like mindless marionettes ...... each time the puppet master changes the music  ;)

No offense intended, it's just been too obvious :P
That's nothing against you personally Sita and if it's any comfort to you, be assured that my face even made it onto dartboards of some IL-2 addicts already :D

Just dont take it as malicious, If anything Mike was always proponent of level headed discussion.

It would be good if everything said here would made its way to TD and serve as a bridge, not as an example of "That's why we dont discuss things with public" (that would be a lazy excuse to use when your action being called out)
I think it would be really awesome if somehow we all got together and made sure IL2 have a long road ahead and wont die due to fractured community one or two official patches more down the road.

well, maybe just to throw my final 2 cents into the discussion: I think it might be better to try and further 4.12 as a common platform for modding endeavours, now that we have CUP and many mods working under that hood (with the exception of certain parts of C&C unfortunately)

IMHO theoretic discussions about by whom, how and when "cooperation" of sorts should be achieved do not further our cause in the near future and to be honest, I am also thinking that we might see the end of the road for "official" patches, if they provide a new basis for modding each and every time, that only a few if any modders will always take up to update their stuff;

I will skip 4.13 and wait for more stuff from Simon and his great staff, campaign first and formost and if there come along some great ones, those should keep me satisfied for a long time; and if they dont, I have a sh§tload of old 4.10 campaigns I never went through entirely so I am a happy camper :)

of course if some of the goodies from 4.13 can be made working in 4.12 I shall not say nono;
and it might also be time to say a big Thank You to TD nevertheless for giving us the patches they did and providing some great stuff and many happy hours in the past;
you have given modders a great platform to play with - which leads me also to a even more bigger THANK YOU guys to the great modders here who have gone to impressive lengths to create a sim that I did not dream of only a few years ago... VERY WELL DONE GUYS!!!!!

Relax.
You share stuff? Where can I get the "cobbled together" 4.13 + Gurner effects?

...

    +1  you expressed by thoughts exactly, Im quite happy still running DBW for all my old campaigns, so many I have not played them all yet!
Then theres CUP, the growing alternative, two versions that give me all I want still allowing further modding, who needs more.  ;)

... no  ;)

because...

....  it is the very act of making these undocumented changes, fudges and tweaks that causes the wheels to fall off further down the road.

:D

You can't touch me with sarcasm, my mind doesn't work like that :P
Why not just post in on a WIP thread?
Ah... anyway, PM sent, I don't want to be the one that stopped the show :D
