Formosa Map
« on: June 09, 2015, 02:24:26 AM »

It's been awhile but Real Darko and I are working on a map of part of Formosa along with some of the Chinese mainland. It's early days yet and there is work to be done, especially with populating with objects - always a balancing act in places that are densely populated in real life.

However, texturing is more or less done and we thought to give an idea of how the map looks so far.

Make sure you do A LOT of your maps are in CUP  ;D

Yes, I've got a working version of CUP installed. Loads fast.

I'm still working the map in 4.10 though, with DBW and lot of custom tweaks and mods that I use a lot. There is so much to upload and install after this time though. So I guess with an older map maker there should be no problem of compatibility.

Here are a few more shots, along with a tryout for a village. Ufflakke and czech-Texan kindly loaded us some of their objects grouped into villages and we wanted to see how a mix of buildings might look.

On the other hand, I sometimes wonder if a map like this might not look better without objects altogether, airfields excepted. I've been doing some dogfighting to see how it looks and actually, ground objects (with the exception of aaa, smoke, fire and other stuff put in specifically for a mission) hardly ever catch my eye at all. There is too much action in the sky going on to worry about the scenery on the ground ...

I've also noticed that some objects are very light and contrast heavily with textures like the ones used on this map, making them look a bit out of place. You don't get this with desert maps since both objects and textures are usually on the light side.

But, we'll see. Maybe other members have ideas about placing objects.
