Friendly aircraft under own fire AI
« on: June 13, 2015, 09:17:34 AM »

I've often seen friendly aircraft that were inadvertently taken under fire by myself, do nothing more than issue a radio warning and then continue flying straight on as if everything were hunky-dory.

Wouldn't it be more realistic if friendlies coming under fire from their own side, would start to take evasive action, scatter, break formation and try to evade friendly fire? It doesn't seem realistic for them to just fly on as if nothing were happening.

Could that perhaps be addressed by an AI modification?

What would be really cool is if friendly AI had the possibility of "changing allegiance" when fired on.

Vs. Aircraft:

First shot: Friendly AI evades and generally goes "full defensive" while holding fire and calling out the attack on the radio.

Second and subsequent shots: Friendly AI treats the attacking planes as hostile - shooting at them and maneuvering aggressively until the original attacker is disabled or flees.

This would nicely set up "blue on blue" (or "red on red") situations where US forces attacked Soviets, or where P-51s were "bounced" by friendly fighters because they looked like Bf-109s.

Vs. Flak

First Shot: Friendly AI planes should go full defensive and should maneuver and communicate to try to show that they're friendly.

Second and subsequent shots: Friendly AI planes go full defensive and try to flee.

AI routines are now encoded  in a TD dll.

To make special tests during my conversion I often use airplanes friends on whom I draw ...
I can assure you that some of those friends trigger avoidance procedures as soon as I shoot them.
But it is mainly the pure fighters and heavy bombers that do it best!  :-X
And I'm 409 / UP2 user with various old Mods that modify the behavior of AI ...

Meaning that modders can't get at them?

I seem to remember an old game where an aircraft on your side would attack you if you continued to fire at it.
Might have been CFS1 or 2, or maybe 3.
