If your texture has the string 'fields' in its name you can assign a greyscale .tree file which will determine where the (nice, animated, 3d) forrest=3 trees appear.

For example:

MAPS\_Tex\land\summer\sk_LowLand1_fields.tga
MAPS\_Tex\land\summer\sk_LowLand1_fields.tree.tga

In the cities you need to place these trees manually in the unlocked FMB ( 'Tree Line' in the object list ). If you use too many of them you'll get low fps and a constant console warning.

You can only have this type of forest if you use OpenGL graphics mode and forrest=3 in your conf.ini.
The only problem with it is that the pop up distance is low.

The other type of wood (that layered thing which can cover large areas) is also added in the unlocked FMB by selecting Tile/Wood0 texture slot and painting with it on the map. The best way to study these things is to extract an existing map and modifying it.

Everything about trees and woods you can read in KevinP's tutorial.
