Nice update Tom.   :)

I didn't have a UP201 version of the game installed, so have installed this update from scratch as per your guide.  I've decided to have just two Sabre models in my install, the F-86A-5 with the early slatted wing, and the later F-86F-25 with the famous fixed 6-3 wing, wing-fence, and all-moving tail plane.  I just remarked out the 'F-86F25E' ( inserted // ) in my air.ini here: IL-2 Sturmovik 1946/Files/com/maddox/il2/objects/air.ini

I also changed my plane's in-game name to "F-86F25L             F-86F-25 Sabre, '52\u02DC" here: IL-2 Sturmovik 1946/Files/i18n/plane_ru.properties

It seems reasonable to me that a single F-86F-25 model is quite representative.  Apparently even some F-86E models (slatted wing and all-moving tail plane) were field-fitted with the 6-3 wing in Korea, so I'm happy with this compromise for my game:

"The F-86F-25 was introduced with a legendary new wing designed in response to pilot reports that early F-86Fs in Korea could not turn as tightly as the Mig-15 in combat at high Mach numbers and altitudes. F-86s turning with MiG-15s had encountered aerodynamic forces that opened their leading edge slats, which normally opened only at slow speeds.

To correct this problem, North American test pilot George Welch suggested a change in the Sabre's wing during summer 1952 that led to the famous "6-3" wing. Welch recommended removing the slats and extending the F-86's leading edges instead. Three modified F-86E Sabres were tested. By August 1952, the 6-3 wing was perfected. This modification deleted the leading edge slats and added a new solid leading edge with six inches more chord at the root near the fuselage and three inches more length at the wing tip. Finally, a five inch high boundary layer "fence" was added to the wing's upper surface at 70% of the wingspan to direct air flow. These changes resulted in a lowerdrag coefficient and added seven miles per hour to the Sabre's top speed to 695 miles per hour. They also improved the maneuverability at high altitude by delaying the onset of buffeting.

The result of these changes was that the F-86F now turned inside the Mig-15 at high altitudes. The F-86's performance improved by 1.5g at Mach 0.92 at 30,000 feet before buffeting developed. The operating altitude also increased to 52,000 feet, maximum Mach reached 1.05 (in a dive), and the rate of climb increased by almost 300 feet per minute. The F-86F then became the unquestioned supreme day fighter in the world, but the trade off for the improved high-speed performance was that the Sabre's stalling speed was increased by 20 miles per hour. This required a faster landing approach (as there were no leading edge slats), and the low speed handling qualities suffered. Higher take off and landing speeds were needed to maintain controllability, but the improvement in combat far outweighed any negative aspects."

NB: a similar exercise could be done if instead of the F-86F-25 the player prefers to have a representative F-86E  (made from the F-86F25E model) using your 3D update version with no wing fence.

Cheers

Thanks KiwiBiggles. :)
With UP 2.01 and my limited experience to modify slots, my preferred compromise was indeed use the wing fence model and fly the F-86F-25L.

Unfortunately, the slatted wing update suffered from an old bug-so I replced it with the default model but new canopy blister.

Thanks for the links!

Hope tomorrow I can finish the stand in mirror. So far the pits (new upload tomorrow) look decent.

Cheers

Thanks Tom! Pits and 3D updates are really nice in my much-loved 4.09 manual modact install too.  :)

For a 4.09 modact install you would want this mod first:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,3445.0.html

Be aware of a possible modact conflict with .50 Browning machine guns.  In my modact install I have the P-51Bs from here:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,4665.0.html

... which require the .50 Brownings from the Hellcats here (I installed both the complete P51-B and Hellcat plane packs in my game, might as well enjoy 'em all!):

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,4666.0.html

These .50s may cause a conflict with your 4.09 Sabres (for example a 'null' message on mission loading), which I fixed in my modact install with these M3 Brownings (by CY6):

You will also need a 'sound and gun mod', for example this classic:

Hope it helps someone!  :)

P.S.  if anyone has problems installing UV2 in their modact install, I have a very nice combined sound pack and Tiger Flybys 'Lite' that will install over the SAS Sound and Gun mod.  It will possibly conflict with some other mods, like the PAT camera mod, and perhaps some of the heavier fx packs, but its very satisfying in my lightly modded modact install with the standard SAS fx pack.  Happy to share.

---------------------------------

22 October 2015, Edit:  Here are links to the sound files from my current 4.09 Modact install.  These are a lite, cutdown, SAS patched version of the original Tiger's Flybys, and a very nice sound compilation by Jafa.  Download the files and extract the folders into your MODS folder - job done.  I really enjoy the way these files sound, and they aren't too 'heavy' in my install.  Hope you enjoy 'em too.  Recommend installing these in a clean 4.09 modact install, over the 'classic sound and gun mod' listed above (or use all the files above to have a nice collection of 4.09 MiGs 'n Sabres, P-51s and Hellcats all with compatible Browning .50 calibre machine guns).  This setup works great with even modest hardware, and I thoroughly recommend it if you have problems with heavier packs and want to enjoy a classic-modded 4.09 level game.  Thorsten is also intending to try these 4.09 files in 4.12 as an alternative to UV3.

https://www.mediafire.com/download/1hfbgpabla0brmt/Windblow_fix.7z

These files are zipped straight from my own thoroughly-tested MODS folder, and should work in your fresh 4.09 install straight away too, provided I haven't forgotten anything.  Please let me know if you have any problems, and I'll do my best to help.  Remember to back up in case of hassles.

My current 4.09 modact install also has a very nice (in my opinion) collection of lite 4.09 FX (some quite rare) which I can also upload if folks are interested.  Edit: 4.09 FX uploaded, see this thead: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,48860.0.html

All the best, KB.  :)

Hi Biggles, glad you enjoy it. Ideally, one kind soul would also check the speed behaviour between ca. 360 and 430 Knots, but apart that, these jets are really fun to fly.

Cheers

Here is a small update to get rid of the annoying airbrake sound (and a little file for gear touchdown as well):

See post above: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,46792.msg520587.html#msg520587

...for special, lite, SAS patched version of the original Tiger's Flybys mod, plus very nice Jafa sounds compilation, compatible with a 4.09 modact install, (and of course compatible with this awesome F-86 update).

Cheers, KB.  :)

Thanks a lot mate! :)
I mainly asked because I seek an alternative for my 4.12 sounds, where UV 3 is fully incompatible with jet mods it seems.
But as they are intended for 4.09m where we are posting right now, sure folks who have issues with Tiger's sounds will enjoy those and try..

Cheers
