A 4gb patch was attached to one of the rFactor mods I was using awhile ago & it patches x86 executables to be able to use 4gb instead of 2gb. Would this work for Il2?

This has been around for about 5 years now.
Would this work?
Depends on how you define "work".
If "work" equals to "it doesn't break the game" then yes, it works.
If "work" equals to "it improves the game" then no, it doesn't work.
It cannot because IL-2 is using it's own 32 Bit Java Virtual Machine and like every other 32 Bit application, this Java VM cannot make use of more than 2GB, whether or not you toggle that single magic byte in it's exe (which is all what this "patch" does).

I recall years ago when this came out for IL-2 mappers it was quite interesting as it gave a lot more memory to load up quite large maps or heavily populated maps.

I recall using one in just a map making version.

But that wasn't the 4GB patched il2fb.exe, it was the different memory limited versions like 512MB, 768MB or 1024MB.
Setting the 4GB flag is nothing but a placebo effect.
