Best looking aircraft, I would go for the Mig-3.
Now, surely for worst looking, nothing beats a Fairey Barracuda   :P

Among the beautiful jets there's just too many of them to enlist.
The Hawker Hunter, Northrop F-5, Lockheed Startfighter, BAC TSR.2, Lockheed SR-71, Convair F-106, North American A-5 Vigilante... this list could become pretty endless.
Sleek lines, like found in many 50-70 designs, make most of them look pretty in a way.

Talking about planes that "look somewhat wrong, yet effective" like the Fairey Barracuda, I'd also like to throw in the Blackburn B-54:

Eww, the barracuda certainly takes the cake as one of the ugliest. As for the best looking, for military, I'd have to go with the Mirage III. For civilian, I really like the look of the newer Beechcraft Bonanzas (the A36 and G36 models). As for ugliest civilians, I absolutely despise the look of the T-tail Piper Arrows. I was so happy when I saw that the newer ones have a standard tail.

For me there's nothing more beautiful than a Mk.I Spitfire

As far as ugly goes, Blohm & Voss came up with some real pigs arses before/during WWII:

Most Beautiful Mil's IMHO
Prop: a Griffon engined Spitfire (with a pointy tail Mk.19 or was it Mk.21 ?)
Jet: F105D/G Thunderchief/Super (or Ultra) Hog, EE/BAe Lightning, & the HP Victor Bomber; which oozed pure predatory bombing power with its 'hunkered down shoulders' wings.
Civvie; Piaggo Avante - svelte lines indeed, without the BuV style quirkness of Bert Rutan planes.
Ugliest..
Vickers Valiant,
Fairley Gannet,
Jet prototype successor to the IL2 Shturmovik.

Ugly: SIAI Sm.85...
