WIP Map of "Gilf Kebir" region, North Africa - FINAL VER 2.1
« on: October 19, 2015, 06:05:56 AM »

Dear all
ver 2.1 has been withdrawn.
Ver 2.2 is now final.  See "MTO Maps" section, at thread
 https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,51110.0.html

Dear  IL2 fans,
Gilf Kebir  update: Version 2.1:  This is the FINAL version, as far as I'm concerned.
With Moderator's approval, this map can be considered "complete", and shifted from WIP.

get v2.1 at:
https://www.mediafire.com/download/1lypbwd32l2j01a
/Gilf_Kebir_final_ver_2_1_from_fatty_finn.7z

This version has quite a bit of texture re-mapping, to remove some of its worst eye-
sores.  Some eye-sores still remain of course, and the map will never be perfect!
Also fixed a couple of road errors, and one or two other minor things.

see read me for earlier notes.
         happy desert flying !!

Dear  all,

Gilf Kebir  update: Version 2.0 now available at
https://www.mediafire.com/download/bm3b77kvscchog9/Gilf_Kebir_ver_2_0_from_fatty_finn.rar

This new version is a joint effort between myself [fixing unfinished texture mapping , in various parts of map],
and: 242Sqn_Cat, who has fixed the continuity problems at edges of all textures that needed fixing, with new BUMP files to match.  He has also added national boundaries to the start-up map.
Thanks to 242Sqn_Cat for all his help -the map is much the better for his efforts!
[and who knows? he may come up with an even better Ver 3.0 !]

Let me know if any problems.

That is an almost forgotten region,
but to my knowledge the area south of the
Kufra was buisy, more than we think.
LRDG and german Brandenburgers gave each other a hand.
Love the desert maps too, so this comes perfectly straight into my DBW.
Thanks a bunch for sharing

Hello fatty,

have it running in my "4.10 & DBW"!  ;)

Simply wonderful!

Now you can see that some of my (HD) skins make sense.  ;)

Best regards, Gerhard

I am a desert fan, to the point that I almost only fly in the MTO, so you have no idea how much I thank you ...!  :D

Looks like files "GILF_KEBIR COLOUR.BMP" and "GILF_KEBIR GREY.BMP", "grab0000.tga" and "Mymap_c.tga"  are useless and can be deleted ...  ;)

... same with all .static files except "actors.static" ...  ;)

Many thanks, I like the textures you made and also am of course a desert map fan, almost exclusively fly desert and PTO.

Looks like a nice playground for both my Lightnings in desert camo and some Mig flights.

"Il2 deserts only look beautiful early or late in the day - and the real desert pilots would agree with that."

I agree, most IL-2 desert maps have to be avoided around high noon and bright daylight.
Same with my mapmods. ;)

Cheers

...seems that's about to change - judging by the positive comments  ;)

Thanks for creating this gem - also great for just flying around in a Tiger Moth and observing the beauty like in "The English Patient"  8)

Thanks all, for the kind remarks.  It's a great community to be part of.

Mick: regarding your comment:

thanks for the heads-up on this matter.  Sad to say, I have very little idea what each file does!
I will put up a new version, with those files deleted -  maybe next week-end.

Those files are together roughly half the size of an entire to quarter old FreeFalcon install. ??? Deleting them can't hurt. ;)
