Karelia - Finland vs. Russia 1939 - 1944
« on: November 04, 2015, 11:29:26 AM »

My Finns Lentolaivue 32 Squad have started Online-testing with my totally new Karelia map. Everything is working fine and I hope that first "Beta-version" of this map is released before XMas. It has been a huge job, but almost all the twenty historical grass/sand airfields are done and also the biggest towns are going to be ready. My terrain tectures are almost ready done, too, now I still use Compass' nice fields, everything else is created by myself.

Here's a YouTube-video from our Online testing yesterday from Olonets Isthmus and Nurmoila Airfield. As you can see the landscape is not ready yet but it is under process, too! And yes, Karelia's conifer forestes and swamps are very dark from the air and the forestes are HUGE! :)

LENTOLAIVUE 32 - KARELIA MAP HOSTING TEST

Here's the navigating map (under process, too). The map contains about 550 km x 410 km and it is 75 % forestes.

Very good, Kanttori!  Again the textures look very realistic and inviting!
Good to see a new thread for this map.

As for the Tikhvin region mentioned before...right now I do not know if I can do anything to get it started and with research because I am too busy on other things.  So maybe later next year, like you said.

Including Leningrad?  :)
That might be a challenge to have a populated city like Leningrad without loss of frame rate.

Looking good. Where did you pick satellitedata?
When we did with Agracier our maps, satellitedata for Finland was really crappy compared to other areas.

Thanks !
.... Yandex map screenshots overlayed and drawn by hand in map_c then map_h adjustments, lots of touch ups until the shape is right.
Not a very fast process  :P

Zoran395: I am very interested with your Kornstadt, it looks great!

Actually I am not populating Leningrad so full than it is for ex. in FinsGulf map. This is a Finland vs. Russia Winter War and Continuation War map and Finland never attack against Lenigrad City. I am going to copy only the Leningrad's central town to this map from FinsGulf map. The rest Of Leningrad area is going to be textures with houses and factories here and there. There are also coming many historical grass and concrete Russian airfields around Leningrad: Kasimovo, Levashovo, Gorskaya, Komdatskoje, Pavlovo etc.

Kapteeni: I didn't use satellite data with the map-C file. I found a good Russian map and I composed a huge map (about 20 000 pixels X 16000 pixels) from screenshots with a good reasolution. The dark area in the middle of the map is ONE 1920 x 1080 screenie (this working picture is one year old):

The I use Photoshop and cut the blue waterways away and scale the final map to 11200 x 8320 pixels grayscale map_C-file.  I was a huge job, let me say! ;)

This is the high-class Russian map site. It is much more better and exact map than the Google Earth: http://maps.yandex.ru/?ll=34.572889%2C62.132006&spn=6.569824%2C1.589311&z=8&l=map

The 2800 X 2080 pixels grayscale map_H is made from the satellite data. I scaled the map_C's working version also to 2800 x 2080 pixels and adjusted the map_H just precise with the map_C with Photoshop's Tools: Scale, Skew, Perspective etc. So as you can see it needs a lot of Photoshop working. It has been my main application over 20 years in my daily work... ;)

So this is not an update from an old Kapteeni's huge Karelia map, it is becoming a whole new map and it takes a time to finish it. But I think the first version is available on next winter. I am going to finish the Karelian Isthmus and Olonets Isthmust (in the middle of the map) to this version. After that I am going to concentrate the "edges" of the map... ;)

Here's couple of custom objects made to this map from my Finnish friends: The Castle Of Viipuri and buildings from the Viipuri Railway Station. Those pictures are from the older Winter War map but I have included them to the new Karelia, too.

That's all very interesting on how you didn't use satellite data for map_C but you did use it for map_H.  I never thought of doing things that way.  Very clever.  This will be a great map!

That's exactly what I did with my touch-ups, I would say instinctively because I have only been playing with maps for 3-4 months now...  ;)

I've got something in my head about campaign specific actors.static:
  • One very large map thanks to Kanttori exquisite skills, with Yandex precision.
  • Its objects are Winter War and Continuation War centered done by a Finnish team, expect great Finnish focus!
  • Some VVS/Leningrad obsessed people can develop what they are keen on.
  • Volkhov pocket minded ones could do the same.
  • Luftwaffe fans may want to focus on their airfields.
Keeping the same map base, you activate via JGSME what you need for your Online/Static campaign/DGEN, a modular approach similar to what CUP does.

All the best and lots of fun !!!
