Following this topic with interest, you have carried out some great work gentlemen. Wanted to ask a few questions if I may.

Vp is the screenshot you posted earlier of the dirt runway with all the taxi ways just one texture? Or is it made up from several joined together? I like the look of it very much, I'm not a fan of all the straight lines, such as runways, roads, railways we have in the game.

Which leads to my second question, would it also be possible to make road and rail segments using the same procedure? I realise vehicles would not run on them, but they would look good for 'eye candy'. Cheers

sparky, i've just been fiddling with some of the plates that VP has done, and i can say that they are just one texture.
the great thing for me, is that it's really easy to simply edit the texture/transparency to get almost any specific airfield/runway shape yo can think of. it's great! :D
i've also never been a fan of the ruler-straight edges of many runways in the game - barring concrete runways, you never see that kind of uniform angularity on dirt/grass/mud runway edges . they are so easy to spot from a huge distance because of this, and that is completely opposite of what you would expect of a runway during wartime...
the sky is literally the limit with this way of doing it. we need never see another of those perfectly straight-edged runways in the sim again, if we use these, and it's real easy to edit it to make the exact shape runway you want :D
as for your second question - there are already similar road textures, from quite some time back already, which give a realistic, curved look to roads - the drawback is, as you say, vehicles won't (naturally) run on htem, but you could always set vehicles up with waypoints in FMB, to follow these roads - i've done it on some maps in the past, and it works just fine.
as for railway, i don't know - there was also some sort of work-around technique, i think, to get trains to do a similar thing, but it was much more involved, iirc

A how to do it is explained here by KiwiBiggles:

Thanks for replying both.

Great work vp, I really like the way these are developing.

Yes I was aware of the small roads and railways you can place with FMB+, but they can be very time consuming to place due to their small size.

I thought the larger plates would be good for making things like depots, marshalling yards etc.  Very much like vp's industrial texture above, with everything on one plate.

Will download and have a look when I get home.

Cheers

A very interesting discussion and one I intend to get into as soon as I have some free hours!

Is there a frame rate issue using large ground plates?

Dear VP....
many thanks. your work here makes Il2's landscape look just brilliant.
fantastic looking airfields, lakes & creeks.
For small areas: the "drawing of water" can work well - and you've surely nailed it here!
These devpts will inspire many new maps !!

Thx, your comments are much aprreciated. :)

Here's an update for the plate pack, now it has 15 different runway and lake plates:

(I'll only use these plates in the mission files so they wont be a requirement for the nwe map.)

Excuse my ignorance VPMedia, but the static entries outside the german buildings entry, where should I place them?
