ground plates would be a really bad solution for rivers because you cant combine them with the surrounding textures and the nearby trees must be placed manually, plus their place must be prepared first by adjusting the textures and the height map. this could also have an impact on the average fps of the map. smaller places (lakes, ponds, city squares) could be modelled well with ground plates.

The latter is what I had in mind. Canals, ponds, ornamental palace gardens, squares, monuments, etc.
JIR used plates extensively in his Spain maps. I modified some of them with his written permision for my objects.

When it comes to ground plates, the sky is the limit. :)
Right now I need to find the largest usable ground plate in this sim. The one I'm using right now was designed for runways so its not a perfect square. I see only one problem with them, the visbility distance. I've set 10k but its still not enough. Map textures dont have this problem, but ground decals just pop up suddenly.

You only need to create the new texture with an alpha channel, the ground plate meshes are readily available from the sfs files.

Some runway plate experiments, they can be easily duplicated and adjusted to any texture.

I also checked the possibility of reflections and I think its doable, I'll share all of my results later.

Thanks mate :)

The best way is to take the airfield texture and make it lighter and apply that to the runway plate. The result is perfect:

@vpmedia,
Does this mean you have created an object - in this case a runway plate -  that has the size of a 512x512 (or a 1024x1024) fullsize texture?
For quite some time I've been searching for something like this actually.

Or am I mixing up things?

Hi, Uuff,
my dirtSnow and dirtGrass is on 512 x 512 tga file. I do not see why not to use 1024 x1024 tga files as well.

Uzin, those plates have only this area for use, its  ~1024*340, marked with red. Its good for a single runway but cant have taxi paths with it: http://i.imgur.com/Gc3vomF.jpg

The plate I'm using can cover almost an entire airfield so I assume that its a full 1024*1024 plate, the mesh is from an object called Angkor but its probably based on one of the stock Kronstadt plates.

Hi, Uuff,

I will give it a try then.
It would be great in case it covers the entire surface of a map texture.
What I want(ed) to achieve is simulating water on the paddy rice field textures on Cyberolas' Burma map. It would also improve the rice fields on mission_bug's Vietnam map or the Japan map by Redko for instance.

As a quick experiment I tried it already with small runway plates on the Burma map.
But when it covers the whole texture it would save me a lot of time and it definately would look better.  ;)

Uufflakke, heres what I got so far: http://ulozto.net/xqadr4Rs/static-ground-plates-7z

Code: [Select]
[buildings.Plate$Lake_1]
Title           Lake_1
Mesh            3do/airfield/Plates/Lake_1/mono.sim

[buildings.Plate$Lake_1b]
Title           Lake_1b
Mesh            3do/airfield/Plates/Lake_1b/mono.sim

[buildings.Plate$Lake_2]
Title           Lake_2
Mesh            3do/airfield/Plates/Lake_2/mono.sim

[buildings.Plate$Runway1]
Title           Runway1
Mesh            3do/airfield/Plates/Runway1/mono.sim

[buildings.Plate$Runway2]
Title           Runway2
Mesh            3do/airfield/Plates/Runway2/mono.sim

[buildings.Plate$Runway3]
Title           Runway3
Mesh            3do/airfield/Plates/Runway3/mono.sim

[buildings.Plate$Runway4]
Title           Runway4
Mesh            3do/airfield/Plates/Runway4/mono.sim

You can use the runway plates 1-4 to create more objects.
