JackStones Big Bird B-17 campaign tweaked for online play
« on: December 25, 2015, 01:11:27 PM »

EDIT as of 11 January 2016;
PLEASE NOTE the following.......
I had adapted the original campaign so that it would work online.  I didn't use it or set it up as a standalone campaign.
That being said you can still play it offline by simply using the online method as follows;

a.  Copy the B-17 Coop mission folder into IL2 Sturmovik 1946\Missions\Net\Coop
b.  Start IL2 then select Multiplayer and Create New Server
c.  In the NAME box you can type anything you want (it doesn't affect anything)
d.  In GAME TYPE select Cooperative and in Max Players put in at least 4 (the aircraft not selected by a human will be flown automatically by AI)
e.  Click on CREATE
f.  In MISSION TYPE select B-17 Coop Campaign (if it isn't there then you have placed it in the wrong folder)
g.  Once you select the B-17 Coop Campaign you will see a list of the missions displayed below it.
h.  Select the mission you want and click LOAD
i.  The mission will load and you will see the map and briefing screen.  Click on AIRCRAFT.
j.  Select the Aircraft you want(Note; if you don't select the pilot position you can't get into the ARMING screen) then click on ARMING
      -- Side note:  If you select a gunner position then hit FLY you will be restricted to only gunner positions, the AI will fly the plane, you won't be able to.
                          If you select the pilot position then hit FLY you can still go to any gunner position and then return to the cockpit
k.  Select your WEAPON LOADOUT, your SKIN and your NOSEART then click on APPLY
L.  Click on BRIEF and you will now see your fight plan on the map
m.  Once you have read the BRIEF and are ready to go click on FLY
n.  The next screen is the READY screen where you would normally see other online players joining you but as you are doing this offline it will be empty, simply hit FLY again

You should now be in the cockpit on the runway.  Start your engines and get going.  If you did not select the lead plane you'll have to wait until the aircraft in front of you take off.

As the title implies....

This is JackStones original Big Bird campaign with some "tweaks" I added.  All credit for the hard work goes to JackStones for an outstanding bomber campaign.
I have detailed my additions/tweaks in the readme file included in the download but here's a brief summary;

1.  The campaign was adapted for online coop play (i.e. 4 humans flying a flight of B-17s the rest were AI).  We flew all 25 missions and thoroughly enjoyed them (again, kudos to JackStones).  That being said, there is no reason why it can't still be played as SP.
2.  His recon photos are included as well as skins for the 384th BG
3.  Some enemy fighter and flak tweaks
4.  I added some TRIGGER objects which, if the situation applies, will spawn Air Sea Rescue aircraft and/or Royal Navy ships to specific grids.  Eye candy only though, sorry.

Again, very special thanks to JackStones for his original work and I hope players find this tweaked version as enjoyable.

Merry Christmas

I have not, as yet, installed and tried this as a Single Player campaign so my experience (and enjoyment) has been as a coop online campaign

Interesting .
Is the campaign designed for 4.12.2 or HSFX 7 ?

Dear Tomoose,
I downloaded your campaign and installed it on my game WAW up to part 20.
Unfortunately I was unable to launch it. It does not appear on the list of possible campaigns when I try to start it in the campaign folder of USAF.
Do you have an idea of the reason? Surprisingly I was able to launch in FMB.
Best regards.

Most probably this:

I didn't use it or set it up as a standalone campaign.

Offline campaigns have a special structure, that series of missions played online as a campaign have not.

Play it as a serie of single missions or tweak it to become an offline campaign.

Dear Rollnoop,
could you be so kind as to tell me where I could find some explanation about the "tweaking" of a campaign to get it online?
Thank you and best regards.

Just open an offline campaign that works, compare what files are in that are not in the one that doesn't.

It's a matter of editing a few files with notepad. I'm 10000km from my gaming PC and probably will miss some info if trying to list them by heart, but there's at least a campaign.ini and an info.properties.

edit:this might not be enough if author hasn't affected player to any aircraft, or has incorrectly set different squadrons to allow use of any ranks. In this case one will need to be familiar with FMB to do more edits, or be able to analyze and modify .mis files with notepad.

Most infos are available directly in the Il2 manual, as far as I remember. It's in pdf form in your main Il2 directory.

Tartenmuche;
The original Big Bird campaign by JackStones was for offline SP.  It's not difficult to 'convert' it for online play although I will admit my method is probably the clunkiest.
Essentially (someone will correct me if I'm wrong but it's worked for me so far) to play a any SP campaign online all you are doing is playing each individual mission (as mentioned in rollnloop's post).
In my case I took the Big Bird campaign and loaded each mission into FMB.  I made whatever changes I wanted then saved the mission into a separate folder in the Missions/Net/Coop folder.
Then it was just a matter of Creating a server (i.e. hosting), then opening the appropriate mission and loading it up.  I'm basically repeating what I've stated in bold in my original post.

One thing to note:  For whatever reason the briefing text (i.e. the .properties file) didn't show up originally.  What I did was copy and paste the text from the .properties file into the Long Description window in FMB for the mission.

This applies only to non-dynamic campaigns (i.e. the results of a mission do NOT have any impact/influence on the next mission in the series).

To re-iterate;  my instructions in bold in the original post can be used for online or offline.  The only real difference is the READY screen.  If you're playing online then your buddies will show up here when they are connected and have selected an aircraft.  Once all players show up, the "FLY" button will appear.  If you are the host, you hit the "FLY" button and you are off and running.  If you're playing offline you will automatically see the "FLY" button, hit 'FLY' and you will be taken to your aircraft.

NOTE:  If you want to play online (coop) then the missions must be in the appropriate folder e.g. Missions/Net/Coop  otherwise you won't see them.

Hope this helps.  As mentioned, if you follow the outline in bold in my original post it can apply to most campaigns/missions sets.

EDIT:  If you are interested in online only (specifically coop with your friends), you might want to check out Lowengrin's Dynamic Campaign Generator (commonly referred to as DCG).  This is an excellent tool that essentially creates campaigns (online and offline) and the results of one mission will impact the direction of the campaign (i.e. your missions will affect the outcome of the war/campaign).
