Help to improve FPS in IL2 1946
« on: January 01, 2016, 08:28:46 PM »

(Admins please move this thread / message to another thread if this is not the correct one, i am new to this site and i'm not 100 percent sure where to post to ask help.)

So i recently installed the 12 modules of WaW and it works fine, at the moment i don't intend to download more because there's so many new planes to try out already, but the problem is that my game runs at around 15-30 FPS. Now as stupid as it sounds, i don't actually have FPS counter, but the frame lag is so significant i can spot it.

I have a laptop, not a gaming one but it should be good enough for games, especially IL2 1946.

I have 2.4ghz Intel i7, not sure which i7 though.
6GB of RAM.
Geforce 610M 2GB.
And uhh. Well that's all i know for now, i'm not a very smart computer guy  :D

So i heard that people have had tremendous increases in FPS with changes of configs and i tried myself too, but without success.
What i am asking here is for tips how to improve FPS and maybe even reply with a premade config file that you have that increases FPS.

Thanks!

welcome to the forums, mate - i might move this into the main tech help section, not sure if Hardware is quite right - but it might be -
the sad reality is that although our laptop should be good enough for a stock version of IL-2, i'm afraid that it won't make the grade for a fully-modded IL-2. therein lies the rub. these laptops with integrated video will simply never be able to handle the kind of cpu/graphics load that a modded IL-2 demands.
bottom line - if you want to enjoy a modded IL-2 experience at good framerate, you will need to fork over the dosh for a video card upgrade - another factor which laptops are unfortunately not really designed for.
if you can get a better dedicated video card for the laptop, do it - if not, better start saving for a better one, or a desktop which you can upgrade at your leisure.
sorry that i don't have any better news for you, but there it is....

I was thinking about this because a lot of people reported fps problems in CUP, but I'm not using that modpack so I cant fix your problem but if I were you first I'd try to disable all jsgme activated mods in CUP and check fps again. This way you can exclude those mods from the possible causes. Lets say we dont get lucky and disabling things didnt help. Then I'd try to run the entire Black Death track in CUP and in SAS modact 5.3 (selector option) and check my average fps in both cases. If the results are the same then its the hardware/conf.ini/nvidia settings - if the results are different then its something in CUP.
To fix fps problems in CUP you would need to extract the whole thing and start deactivatin suspicious mods one by one, checking the fps each time with the same track. I'm sure its a java mod for game engine, sound or effects which is responsible for this. I installed many (~23Gb) mods on SAS modact 5.3 and my game fps remained more or less the same.

Imho IL-2 doesnt seem to like certain laptop cards, many users reported only being able to run DirectX (inferior/secondary graphics mode in IL-2) with these cards always marked with xxxM.

you're right, mate - that entire series isn't really cut out for intensive graphics...

Chupacabras84's Lightened Up air ini does wonders for my WAW frame rate:

I'm now upgraded to Part 17, and it still works. There are several modes tailored to different historical periods and nationalities, and one does need to remember to have the appropriate mode activated.

yep, you'll find if you can cut some corners, things will go better.
i also use custom air.ini sets that i just swap in and out, for those heavier game builds....

Situation report! Thank you all for help!
After bit of experimenting this and that, it seems that with OpenGL i get best results.

In JSGME i have enacted WAW def skies and the lightened up air.ini , helps quite alot.

First tests taking off from ground at good graphics def skies and DirectX provider proved to be around 10-20fps. Taking off didn't help sadly and the FPS kept at around the same. Second test with lowered graphics and the same stuff as before increased FPS only a little.

I don't remember what i did later on, but i suddenly got 60fps on ground, but after taking off back to 10-20 fps.
I had problems with the texture twitching, it had appeared before in HSFX 7.0 but was fixed by changing from DirectX to OpenGL (or vice versa, can't remember)
With Moscow air spawn it was quite a lot better, but the textures twitched.

Later on i enacted the lightened air.ini too, and changed the config back to default and changed to OpenGL. A massive success!
On Moscow air it proved to be around 100 FPS with lowered graphics
With good graphics 60 FPS with drops to 30-50.

I don't remember if i even tested it at the bessarabia air after changing the config ini and lightened air, but im sure it would work fine there too. If i get around 20fps on ground its enough to take off. The air is the more important part!

Now im not 100 percent sure if i forgot to report something, i just quickly tested what seemed to work and what not.
At one point i think i got 100 FPS with DirectX too but the textures twitched.

Ps. WAW is awesome, i haven't yet tried out any other plane than the Me-262 HG V yet however, but i can say, its awesome!
I have never gone over 1000km/h with a plane without breaking it apart!
Also the amount of new planes is huge! I don't think ill ever fly them all, there's so many variations. Some are just a tiny bit different than others, but some have huge differences. (I didn't even know there were this many Me-262 planned variations, i did read about them on the wiki but never saw them actually, i didn't know they were THIS different o_o)

The only problem i have anymore is that whenever i use the zoom past camera or just go from 1st person to 3rd person, the camera is always really close and i have to press a button to zoom it out. Doesn't sound like much, but it gets on your nerves when you have to do it in battle  ;D

All in all, Thanks alot, i think i got it working now. After around 4-5 days, it was worth it!  ;)

Dear Sirs,
I would like to report my recent experience.
I ran a campaign named Nightfighter1941 written by Poussin.
I got 6fps.
I made a check with "Il2 validation script V0.2" with the following results:
1) ###Stationary vehicles.stationary.CandC$FireUnit not found. This object was actually missing in the stationary.ini folder. I tried to introduce it by typing it in stationary.ini but without improvement so finally I changed in the missions FireUnit into NavUnit and got 30 fps.
2) Weapons were also given as missing but were present in the weapons file of the involved planes. This fact had no influence on the fps.
I reported to Poussin who changed something in the missions (see his thread). I checked the new version with the script: the FireUnit is no longer missing because not required and not present in stationary.ini, the fps is 30 but the weapons are still missing.
Maybe in other cases has the low fps something to do with missing objects?
I hope it will help.
Anyway I recommend the campaign of Poussin, it is first class and full of surprises.
Best regards
