UPDATE!
Added Sea Hurricane Mk.Ib and Mk.IIc.

Same link of post #6.

Thanks to Spitwulf for head-up and guideline on how to fix.

Cheers,

The Spit I, and perhaps some of the early Spit V, could use this treatment.

My treatment was just to suit your gun sight to elevated POV of SAS Hurricane Pack. Spitfire requires your mastery, since there's to replace same "Mark II" gunsight (at least so it is marked in game) with real one. Currently it affects all Seafires and Spitfires but last mark I have, the XIV, which sports a gyro one. Curiously, marks I and II do have an imitation of rounded top gun sight glass.

Greybeard,

4.08 has no Spit I; it starts at Vb. (My Spit I is an AAA mod based on the Vb.) And 4.08 has the Seafire III (the sight version for which I have no real idea.) I suppose the stock Vb and Vc are still the same, essentially? If so, I could work up a pack for those two.

I have already done some work on them, with the Vb working fine, but the Vc has had a strange thing happen--and I don;t know at what point this occurred. The cockpit appears to have been raised a significant distance with respect to the exterior model, with the wings and cowling being definitely lower than for all other Spits. This could have resulted from some other mod; I have detective work to do....

In the meantime, could you attach a screenie or two, showing the earlier Spit sights as they currently appear?

Yes.

Would be fine.

It is likely.

Sure!

Seafire Mk.Ib (this is true for ALL Seafires)

Spitfire Mk.I&II

Spitfire Mk.Va&b

Spitfire Mk.Vc (this is true for ALL next Marks up to XIVc)

Spitfire Mk.XIVe

Greybeard,
Thanks for the pics!

I see that the Spit I and II have a GM-1 sight already. Although the representation of the sight head and collimator (lens too small) leaves much to be desired.

The others having the rectangular reflector, which we'll call the GM-2, are pretty consistent, all probably having the identical mesh. I do object mightily to the position of the reflector lower edge, shown as being in contact with the sight head. There was in reality something of a gap, for such a lowering would do nothing in extending the range of visibility of the reticle. I note also a rather low position for most of the sights (although the GGS seems fine enough), presumably(?) to hide cowling gaps/artifacts.

I'm just after moving to another apartment, and am in something of a state of flux still. Could be a little while before I get around to this. In the meantime, surely there must be some other modder out there for whom such a task as adding to a plane or two my sight and reticle mask would be child's play... ;)

Just a general note or two...

It seems that there's rather less interest in gun sights than such things as new frankenplanes, or even repainted droptanks. This might explain the lack of effort over the years to improve even the truly ugly or unrealistic sights. I don't get this. To me the sight is a *critical* aspect of a simulated cockpit, as so much time is spent looking through or around it. We certainly have it in our sightline a heck of a lot more often than we do our drop tanks. ;)

I feel something like a lone 'voice in the wilderness', playing the advocate for better looking gun sights. I wish other 'cockpit artists' would expand the band to more than one soloist.

And thus far all my work has been done using just Excell and Notepad (and my knowledge of trigonometry for the calculation of surface normal orientations for lighting, or for rotating the coordinate matrix for a model if my orientation differs from that of the stock one.)

i agree, mate, that there seems to be much less interest in this than some other stuff, but don't feel alone, there are still some of us to whom this is vital stuff - myself included.
i think it might be due to many guys thinking that sight mods have gone as far as they can, when really, all we've really seen in this regard have been reticle 'repaints'
believe me, your work is not going unnoticed, and it'll hopefully come into its own once more people begin to realise how fundamentally important this aspect of our flight sim is
keep it up, mate! :D

WXTech and Greybeard,

Please , please don't stop your developments. These small functional details are ,  to me , what nourishes the longevity and continued interest in IL2.
I love all the new aircraft , ships , guns and vehicles as much as anyone out there , but making these technical details truer is why this old gal is still chugging along beside much much newer games/sims.

Just my 10 cents worth.

Thanks for the encouragement, fellas! But it would still be nice to get the ball rolling faster with a couple or few more pairs of hands in the mix. ;)

Or at least if anyone has even as few as 1 or 2 measurements taken from an actual sight (of all kinds) or suitable document, they would provide very useful fiducials upon which to dimension the whole. In many cases I have to proceed with hardly better than guesswork, based on online images or the stock sights in the game. (The latter has too often evidenced suspect variation, if not obvious departure from what I do know.)

I'm with Kopfdorfer and Malone; very pretty eye candy, that's where the original modding started IMHO. Please keep up the good work
