OS2U Kingfisher Skin Request
« on: January 21, 2016, 02:08:08 PM »

Hello chaps, I am a volunteer at the Battleship North Carolina Memorial, which owns a real OS2U. We are considering an interactive exhibit on the Kingfisher, where visitor or students can experience the battleships aviation division first hand with our wonderful sim. I have noticed the IL-2 Kingfisher default skin is somewhat dull, (no offense to the person who made it) and was wondering if anyone would be willing to create a skin in North Carolina markings. Thanks! -Cpt Dawson

That sounds wonderful.
It´s a great idea to use IL2-1946+Mods aircraft to show your guests and museum visitors a
first "hands-on" experience in flying such a classic aircraft.
I believe you will have much success and many happy museum visitors! - It´s fun for the young and old
and the entire family.

But first we would like to have some important information.
Without good information and research an artist can only guess what they are doing, and nothing gets done well.
Many photos can be found on the internet, but its not enough information needed.

- What does the actual aircraft looks like?
Since you have access to this aircraft -The artists need at least 4 daylight color photos showing the
different angles of it. No need for professional photos, but at least decent ones and sharp photos.

- What are the Pilots names written in white-lettering on the aircraft fuselage?
We need their names and proper locations.

- Does it have any original markings or painted emblems which must be painted on the aircraft?

I am sure if you post and describe what I have just suggested , you will
get a few Skinner-Artists painting a very nice selection of skins for you.
You can then decide which one you would like to use in your museum exhibition,
or you can use all the skins created.

By the way, Congratulations to you on having such a great job. Many people just dream of such a job!
Good luck and have fun!

I will leave our forum members with a few details...

By the way, additional skins are available but not easy to find. I've located two skin packs, one in the download for the 4.09 version 1.1m (end of the first post by SAS~Epervier) and one on M4T by mexchiwa :

Maybe this could help...

Thank you, the M4T ones I already have, but the SAS ones are excellent! I've looked for days and not found these!

Max, Thank you for your explanation, I will have all this information ready within a few days. I know we would at least want them in the markings of Lieutenant John A. Burns (Truk rescue) and Lieutenant (jg) Almon Oliver (Honshu rescue)

These are all the pictures of our specific Kingfisher that I can find now, at least until I can get to the plane to take better pictures next week.

On the last picture with models on it, the top OS2U is very similar to ours, but without the #2 on the side.

Our Kingfisher is in the markings of Lt. (jg) Almon Oliver.

As you can see, the plane is navy blue on top, with curves to keep dark blue over the wings, into light blue in the middle, white on the bottom of the fuselage, wings and tail surfaces, and bottoms of all three floats. The tops and sides of the floats are light blue, and a third of the way up the outer floats' supporting spars and half of the way up the center float supports, it transitions to the white on the bottom of the wings.

The ship's number, 55, is on both sides of the nose and both sides beneath Means' name under the back windows in narrow black type.

The propeller is all black, with red tips and nose tip.

His name, Lt. (jg) Almon Oliver is in bold white type just under both sides of the cockpit, with his rear gunner's name, Eldon Means (I don't remember his rank) just below the rear windows on both sides. You can barely make out the placement in the previous pictures I sent.

In addition, this Baby Pegasus is between the cockpits on both sides. Sorry this is not a great picture, but it's pretty small on the plane so it shouldn't be too bad...

Don't be fooled by the coloring of the newer pictures. Our Kingfisher is very weathered. It is supposed to be a slightly drab navy blue color on top, just like a Hellcat or TBM. This picture shows the most accurate coloring.

I may be able to get in tomorrow and shoot some close up pictures, so no hurry. I forgot to mention, I would like to have another skin the same but without Eldon Means on it, since he was killed in a recovery accident and Lt. Oliver flew a few missions without any backseater for rescues in 1945.

that's great - i have  already found most of those pics, so really just any close-ups for any stencil text, such as pilot names, and maybe a pic of exactly where the Baby Pegasus motif is, will be awesome, but i have enough to get it looking pretty good, as is...
it'd be great if i could get a pic showing me a little better the top of the wings and wingroots...i haven't found any pics from that angle....
please allow me a day or three - i was hoping to start today, but been delayed with bug-hunting... ;)

Sure, no hurry. I will stop by the Battleship tomorrow and get some pictures. I might have to stand on one of the 40mm gun mounts to see the top of the wings though! You can see kind of see the Baby Pegasus logo in this close up of the last picture,   but I will get a better one tomorrow. In addition, the pilots names are abbreviated differently than I told you before, I will make sure of the correct words and get back to you.

Thanks again!
