BF:109 Wing Drop Tanks
« on: January 22, 2016, 02:58:05 PM »

Are The BF109 wing tanks suppose to look like that because the pictures i have found have them on mounts like bombs. Any help or proof of them being like that is appreciated.

Thanks

i have to agree, they probably don't look like that in reality.
those 109 mods are pretty old already, could be at the time it wasn't known how to fix it, but it shouldn't be too difficult to rectify.
we will, however, need some pics illustrating the correct mounting, and of course, some feedback from a LW expert who might be able to give better info on this ...

Hey Guys,

These are just from a quick google search and would require an expert to correctly identify the types and variants , but it seems to suggest that likely dual droptanks were in common if not frequent use. The question I have is would the extra range even be modelled remotely truly  for IL2 (which has dubious ranges for many aircraft). If not they would be visually interesting , but not serve their historical purpose.

Poster claims this to be 109E

well, those pics certainly indicate that it might not be wrong as it is - certainly it makes sense, from an aerodynamic point of view, to mount them as 'flush' as possible with the wing... ;)

yeah - it's the first time i've seen that - was it used for maintenance purposes, to assist with loading bombs/tanks, or so...?

on the other pic it  seem they not needed them ...? So maybe a kind of rear nose wheel prototype to help lift the tall with the extra weight on take off  :P

Cool pictures Kopfdorfer, I did look on google for pictures before I posted but could not come up with any. Nice to see someone found evidence.
