Evening all on SAS,

On the 3rd day of my Airfix J-35F build I'm now back at the stage I was prior to my mess up 3 days prior. Yet again being very pleased with my work with paintbrushes and oil paints/acrylic paints. I did have a near heart stopping moment when I accidentally smeared green paint on the underside of the starboard wing.

I used a little thinner to remove it however I took some of the thin coat of Humbrol 64 grey off the wing but after clearing it up and sanding it slightly to get rid of the paint debris I was able to correct it as well as the metal leading edge which I repainted in Humbrol 11 silver.

With that problem rectified I added the nosecone and final touch ups were completed. Decals shall be applied tomorrow once I've varnished the model, also the drop tanks were painted green to stand out with the camo..

Again as before, I'm in love with this model so far and she should be done by Monday with luck. 8)

Nice work. The Draken is a lovely design. I believe the wing form is called a double delta.

Thankyou gents!

With the double delta wing Rob it became possible for this aircraft to become the first to execute the cobra manuever. However due to the strange shape and direct exhaust output it rendered the jet uncontrollable for 5 to 10 seconds.. in case of a dogfight with other aircraft of similar class it was a last resort manuever, which may have worked given the circumstance...

But yep she's coming on nicely and I'm just letting her dry now. I'll apply the floor varnish tomorrow to protect the paintwork then add the decals.. varnish it again and THEN apply the matte varnish. :)

Well gents and friends on SAS,

The Draken got her Klear varnish on today and like the trusty old friend it has been to me for 15 years with enamel painting it exceeded my expectations.. blending the paint together and giving it a satin-esqe shine which the J-35F had in this period, the paint streaking was eliminated and it all bonded perfectly. 8)

Today was a very enjoyable experience as today also the Saab recieved her full markings in the exercise colours of the F10 wing in the 1970's. The decals were easy to put on but there was a catch. They were VERY thin! Due to their age and the style of printing and how they did it in the past. It was something I wasn't used to with this kind at least not for a looooong time type of decals and a few did rip or crack in places, but due to my perseverance and patience you can't tell if they did or not.

It was a very relaxing experience though and now I'm SUPER happy with how this lady is turning out. The next update will be when she's finished and on her 3 wheels. So stay tuned! ;D

Thanks Andy...

To be honest the decals you do get with this kit are actually rather nice. I wouldn't say they're the best as Airfix at the time were at the end of their tenure with Humbrol before they went under their own company in 2006 before they were bought by Hornby in 2010. The decal sheet despite it's age was in beautiful condition with no yellowing or fade but it amazed me how thin they actually were..  ;D

Trust me mate they do class as tracing paper for thickness however they are vibrant and aren't weak in terms of transparency compared to what they released in 2006 with the horrible gloss type decals which don't work at all with decal solution and not even my Klear can get rid of the gloss effect but to add they look colourful but they bleed so much paint... your best bet is to use a different sheet from the same kit but a different release.  8)

Overall they did go on much better than I anticipated. However the crown roundel on the right wing I blew on it to get rid of some fibers and it actually ripped it in two... as you can see I put it back together as if nothing happened and coupled with the Klear it actually melted it back into one piece and you can't see where it split... so kudos to the decal and to the Klear. :)

Afternoon friends and members of SAS,

After 5 days of fun and enjoyment... I am proud to present my finished SAAB J-35F Draken in the colours of the F10 Wing ''Combat Exercise'' in 1/72! Enjoy the pictures... oh and the video as well! :D

Also for a nostalgia part of the post... here is the Saab J-35F Draken which I build in 2009. This particular example was constructed a year after I built one in the same scheme as you see in the final release. However that was very crude and dare I say it the '09 build was no better as I focused more on doing OOB than actually using my abilities... The model below was passed down to someone in 2011 and I have no idea if she's still in one piece or broken up... however once I make another Draken in the very near future it'll be in this scheme from the F13 Wing.

Afternoon all members and friends on SAS,

After my recent SAAB Draken build I decided to cross back over the North Sea back home to Britain for my next build. Here I am starting the Hurricane Mk.IIC box from 2012 and sadly I haven't seen this tool re-released since 2015. However I have a boxing in my collection and it comes with a large variety of 3 paintschemes!

However I'm intending to do a twist of this build... flying with the BBMF is the Hurricane LF363. This aircraft actually took part in the 1969 Battle of Britain film, and from a personal note I've seen her many times at airshows since 1997, and with that I came upon the possession of her markings from 2009 when she was in the colours of YB-W, the decals are made by Cartograf which means they're a great set to use!

She changed her colours in the mid 2010's into a unit flying in Burma in 1944 until last year when she became in my view a beautiful all black scheme which I may do in the future if I buy aftermarket decals when I buy the same kit.

I anticipate and hope the build finishes in the way I envisage and I look forward to feedback on what you all think.

Nice work on the Draken!  ]thumright[

I recently built that Hurri as per boxtop - it's a lovely little kit, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.  :)
