LOD's
« on: January 27, 2016, 01:19:06 AM »

Some old plane model, like Bf 109, on some old game version, like 4.09, suffers of bad modeling and transition at levels higher than "0". For instance, Bf 109E-1, which has no wing cannons, being the plane model likely based on E-4, lets see again wing cannons and relevant underwing bulges as soon as it switches to LOD "1". In addition, odd wing "thickenings" and "plate reflections" are seen at higher LOD's. No need to say how this is disturbing and anti-immersive. Many talented artists improved its LOD "0", like Anto, Jero and JapanCat, but their work vanishes when it goes far than 25 m.

I wonder if would be possible to make an "universal" mod, working with all game versions, allowing player to "set" at will LOD "0" distance; I mean, 50, 100, 66.7, 1000 m or whichever distance he want. I came from experience in RB3D and EAW, where this kind of mod was commonly available and, in my experience, didn't affect at all framerate (in my ignorance, I think CPU spends more power to keep track of all object distances and consequent LOD transition, than to keep all of them at same LOD, lol).

Please!

Happy flying,
GB

Thanks Malone! Glad you share my opinion. Indeed, the variable LOD feature belongs to times when standard resolution was 640x480 on 14" monitors; now, with the 1920x1080 resolution and 22" or more screens, switching among different LOD's is annoying , and becames really a PITA when model maker didn't care about accuracy of higher ones and their smooth transition.

My Bf 109E-1 looks fine in SAS modact, 4.12.

Post some pics of the problem.

My Bf 109E-1 looks fine in SAS modact, 4.12.

Of course. Also DBW is free from this glitch, as well as all more recent stock versions.

I premised I was speaking of 4.09. Here follow some pics, anyway:

Also Ju 87 has similar problem...

well, as it seems to be limited to a 409 issue atm, you might guess my next offering of advice - which is to go and ask our 409 maestro, Epervier to look into it. :D
i've not found this issue on any of my recent installs, so it's likely been permanently fixed since 409.....

i still support the permanent LOD0 suggestion, as i'm sure my current rig would handle it without over-cooking itself.... :D

You are right for the 109E-1!

For the 87B-2 I see nothing changed for LOD4!

Thanks for the fix.

Unfortunately, loading Bf 109E-1 I got following error:

while for Ju 87B-2 situation worsened, since now I see a fuselage gap already at LOD "1", as well as more garbled views at higher LOD's.

... yep, don't you worry, Epervier will fix that as soon as he reads my PM ...  ;)

You only need to open the.msh file to see why it is buggy ...  :)

Long time ago with Carsmaster we experiment with single LOD Planes.  Just LOD0 dist 2800m. No freez no drop of FPS.
I'm not sure abt big amount of planes in air But video runs smoother because no need sudden switch of LODs for different objects in one scene.
