Hi Guys

Since you're modders and i have absolutely no idea about modding, you are the wright Persons to talk to.
The Thing is - i want to build a Bachem Ba-349 Natter. And there are some guys from Germany who are building a replica of it. And on their Homepage i saw some 3D drawings. I've asked them to give me the permission to use it for the mod. Can i use this 3D Model for Modding in il-2? Because another guy i'm in touch with said that i need to build one on your own to meet the specifications of IL-2. i can use that model to check it, but not as main source... Is that true? Is there no other possibility?

IL-2 1946 (and not few other 3D visual games --- flight simulators, FPS, tank / car or truck simulators, battleship simulators) uses polygon mesh 3D models.
To make IL-2 1946 mod 3D models, polygon mesh 3D data is needed.
IL-2 1946's native 3D modeling application is Autodesk 3ds Max. And its old subset GMAX has exporting compatibility.
Other polygon mesh 3D modeling tools like Maya, Blender have 3D data compatibility (able to export and import each other, or export IL-2 1946 format msh data directly).

But if the 3D screenshot you see is made by another way like 3D CAD data or Trimble SketchUp , it has only low compatibility to polygon mesh 3D.
Even format converting is possible, but generated polygon mesh data becomes hangnail, dirty one. A lot of very thin polygons like hair dust are contained, they are almost impossible to choose by mouse click .... impossible to clean-up for IL-2 1946 use.

They can send it to me in the following formats:vrml, wrl, c4d, c4d out of exported 3ds, alembic/fbx

1. what 3D modeling application do you plan to use?
Even what format data you are given, you have to edit that data by yourself to fit IL-2 1946 rules .... clean-up and rename parts, separate or merge them if needed, rebuild smoothing (making faces correctly rounded), etc. before exporting IL-2 1946's .msh data format.
After you decide it, what format you can import by your application is known.
In general, 3ds or fbx has high compatibility.
Some applications have limitations like GMAX can read only 3ds.

2. that format list doesn't mean you can use that data without much troubles
Even 3D CAD or SketchUp that doesn't have high compatibility to polygon mesh 3D data, it can be converted such format, with dirty polygons as I said.
When you are lucky, the team uses polygon mesh friendly application and you can use it easily. But when not, you have to rebuild almost all the polygons if you want a clean 3D model in IL-2 1946. That is unknown before you will look into the data by yourself with native polygon mesh 3D modeling application.

Making or importing the initial Lod0 3D is in any event only the beginning of the process. It is just the start of a long road.

Ok thank you all for the replies. They've send me these pictures of their work,

So, that doesn't helps me at all? Which format is the best one?

vpmedia: the poly count is over 9000! :)) Imho that's a bit too much for Natter. And what's so more, do you really want roblems with copyrights?

Jg-1: ...even DCS would be proud of so detailed model.
