Microdem crashing for no apparent reason
« on: June 07, 2016, 07:52:09 AM »

So, Microdem does not work for me. Worked on previous computer, not on this one though...

After I go through the Modify>Map Marginalia window, whenever I close that window (even without doing any changes), the program crashes... o.o

At first I thought it would be the map size (over 700x600 km), but after I tried it with some 60x60 square - it still crashes, though I followed the manual step by step. So... are there any limitations to that program and ways to overcome it?

(I am now going to mix up the steps order and see if anything changes... like first apply the different height color-scheme...

(System is Win10 - that might be the core of the problem...)

So, after changing the order, I even got a message:
(On a good note, this time it did not crash...)

Seems that between one of the crashes, it remembered the setting and now there is no need to go through it any more...

It still bugs me however, what could have happend...

Apparently you have to make sure that the file you're selecting is in the C:\mapdata\DEMs directory.

Eh, you think that the fact that I installed it into a subfolder might have caused it? ... :|
(Thing is, with the old PC I installed directly into C :))

Hi Koty,

Using Microdem a lot I have never seen it crash.
I have seen a memory issue when doing fairly large sized areas.
I would redo the area again in a slightly downsized scale or try again as sometimes it wiill work prperly after  second try
when you are making your map to 50 75 100 or what ever pixel size you want
The new Microdem has been problem I use an old version all the time from Kevin P.

Cheers

thanks very much for this discussion.  a relief to know I'm not losing my marbles!
I've had the same problem lately: Microdem crashing on attempting to apply any changes via the "map marginalia" box.
I'm currently using Microdem 12.0, build 2011.5.12.1.  Should I be using an older version?
Alternatively, though:
I checked the subfolder structure as suggested above- and that wasn't the problem.
Like NS_Koty said: this problem first arose after I switched computers. I'm now running Win 8.1 - but was running Win7.
Could it be that this has arisen due to some "error handling" routine of Win 8 & later, that is shutting down Microdem unnecessarily? I say this because Microdem doesnt simply crash - it pauses, while windows puts up a message: "this freeware has stopped working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available".
-and none is suggested!

Hi Koty and Fatty,

This is the version I use from Kevin P.

You can initially download and install the latest version of Microdem then overwrite this Microdem folder into the new version.
It should come up as the old version around 2 something I think.

With the new version you can't do single dems to make a map it always wants groups of dems which is not good.

I'm old school and still use ever so trusty XP prof I have seen the old version work on win 7 I don't know about 8.

Just overwrite the main Microdem folder you should have the map data folder already from the new version.

Cheers Kirby

ps there is an IL-2 height file map_h in this links Microdem version as well as a 16 rgb value terrain file if you use for map_T

Just to point out the obvious:
Have you tried running the program in compatibility mode yet?

Best regards - Mike

And-BTW-Kirby aka SAS~farang65 is the best pro microdem user I know of personally, so what he says - I'd assume- is valid at all times. ;D  :)
