- Invincible H8K "Emily" fixed
Hi Mike,
Thanks for all your work on the updates. I'd like to know however, why the H8K Emily was changed?
I've never found her to be "invincible". In fact I've always been able to shoot her down far too easily in the game. Being able to bring the Emily down in the game with only a couple of bursts is highly unrealistic and seriously diminishes the immersion factor.
Historically the Emily was one of the toughest aircraft of the entire war. Even tougher than most four engine bombers. The Emily had to be extremely tough since she operated alone over vast distances without escort fighters and without any mutual protection of other aircraft. In addition to being extremely durable, the H8K had very heavy defensive armament consisting of ten guns... Five 20 mm Type 99 cannons in nose, dorsal, tail and waist positions, as well as an additional five machine guns in fuselage hatches. The game doesn't reflect all these guns and some that should be 20mm cannons are just machine guns in the game.
In addition to self sealing fuel tanks, the Emily also used a Co2 inert gas system for fuel tank fire protection and had a unique feature that if a hull fuel tank was pierced by bullets, the fuel would drain into the bilge and could be pumped back into the undamaged tanks.
The Emily was very heavily armored and was considered to be the most difficult Japanese aircraft to shoot down. It often took thousands of .50 cal rounds to bring an Emily down. Allied pilots used to refer to the Emily as the "Flying Porcupine".
Look at the guncam footage below, where multiple F6F Hellcats take turns pouring massive amounts of .50 cal rounds into an H8K Emily without even being able to ignite her fuel tanks. The Emily's structure also stays intact and her engines keep running despite the massive amount of .50 cal hits she takes all over. Only when she eventually crashes is there an explosion.
