FMB - AI Flying into hills
« on: July 09, 2016, 04:00:18 PM »

I've been getting into using the full mission builder and enjoying it, but on any hilly map I've been running into the issue of some of the AI planes just flying into hills as if they don't notice they are there.
I believe this may be a general issue with IL-2 but searching around I wasn't able to find much discussion on the topic. I've tried setting the way points for the AI flights at higher altitude and that seems to help but I've still regularly see a couple of planes just fly into the ground during level flight.
The map I've most recently been using is Benghalli, but I've seen this on other maps with reasonably sized hills.
Is there any way of setting up the AI flights to avoid this?

Hi and welcome to SAS.. :)

as far as I recall, that was an early bug with one of the 4.12.x Engine Mods (Engine Mod 2.7), I was under the impression that bug was nailed.
A CUP moderator might be able to give you further hints.
Other than that I recommend posting a logfile excerpt.

More info on logfile here..

Thanks Tom.

AI flying into the hills wont show up in the logfile, but I experienced it myself when I installed SAS Modact 5.3 for the first time. A patch was released here:

theres a little hint in post #15

Quote
Patch 002:
* Ground avoidance bug fixed in Carrier Takeoff (CTO) mod. This bug caused AI controlled planes to crash into ground frequently.

the download link is in post #12

I didn't have the CTO mod installed but from the little I've played after installing that patch, it seems to have done the trick.
Thank you.

I forgot to mention that the SAS Engine mod with Westerns patches also has this fix.
I'm using the one I posted, it works fine for me since it was released.

I think this is still an issue. I have mothballed two campaigns now due to aircraft flying into hillsides.

For Example, if I fly the mission below in either CUP or the VPmedia pack, the aircraft will fly into the sides of the Owens Stanley range without any evasive action. If I fly the same mission in DWB the aircraft climb to avoid collisions and continue the mission.

Which planes and where? I ran the mission for a while, all the way until the player squadron reached the bombing waypoint and noticed no planes taking a dive into the mountains.

I do however experience very "cinematic" frame rates when running your mission in my CUP install, even with all optional mods deactivated I'm lucky if it will reach 30FPS. I tried the mission in my VP mod install and it runs completely smooth. Anyone know how to fix that?

Anyway, if you can tell me which planes crash into the mountain I'm happy to do a bit more testing to see if it's working on my end.

Must be a problem with my install then. On my install the player's P-40 flight crashes long before reaching the attackpoint.
