I haven't found a reason the classfiles would be causing any frame rate problems. Continue using the mod without them for the time being if your game has an issue.

I must say the first time I tried in CUP, it put the PC on its knees (2-3 FPS...). I got rid of the classfiles, it was much better but now I have them back in and I do not have the bad FPS at all... It may have been linked to particular effects I was using in the mission, not sure. Or my super modded CUP, who knows.
I any case I am a happy user, in particular the effect when a bullet hit an enemy plane during a dogfight is fantastic. Thank you again!

Thank You for uploading! The smoke and fire effects on damaged ships are awesome. Way better than the default. Works well on my patched 4.12 version.

Hi Dave
I have only just discovered this Mod and it is excellent - some of the best effects I have ever seen. An unexpected bonus was that smoke columns can be seen from a long way off eg from the coast of Guadalcanal I could see the smoke at Tulagi - Fantastic.
I did however experience a big FPS drop - so like you advised I got rid of the classfiles. Immediate improvement!! back to 60 fps.........but the smoke visibility distance (and ship wake visibility distance, actually) was back to normal.
I think the smoke and wake visibility is one of the best FX I have ever seen. Any progress on resolving the fps issue with the 3 classfiles???

regards

I've just been doing some investigating and tinkering about with the classfiles. It looks like the 3 files included in Dave's mod are the same as the 3 files in Gurners 30k distance mod https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,20929.msg226479.html#msg226479.
I've personally never been able to get the Gurner FX to work in 4.12.2 so I don't know if there is an associated fps drop when using them.
Increasing the view distance seems to give a drop in fps (this is currently being investigated over at BAT https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,54580.msg631162.html#msg631162)

However, I tried substituting the 3 classfiles in Dave's FX mod, with Gurners alternative classfiles in his UP3 15k Distance mod. These obviously only give 15k distance view, not as good, but still much better for immersion experience. The important thing was that the fps drop was much less - steady 60 fps with only 5 to 10 fps drop when looking at heavily populated areas.
I'm sure everyone's experience will depend on pc hardware and  individual taste, but for me the view distance is a big part of the immersion experience.
Thanks again Dave for a great FX pack.

Indeed, nice effects.
The only purpose of the classfiles shipped with this mod is the visibility distance.
Visibility distance is directly connected to the frame rates achieved: The higher the visibility distance, the lower the frame rates.
For those playing with VSync enabled, the "sweet spot" obviously is where the frame rates are steady at the monitor's sync rate, which is 60FPS for the most.
But beware: Crowded missions, populated areas (cities), huge fleets (smoke!) etc. let your framerates drop so they can easily end up significantly below that "sweet spot" again.

The game's default values for visibility distance compared to the ones of this mod are:
Code: [Select]
Value...  Distance (km) --> Stock Mod

MaxVisualDistance               5  35
MaxStaticVisualDistance         4  25
MaxLongVisualDistance          10  50
MaxPlateVisualDistance         16  30

Maybe it would make more sense to make these settings user-configurable, e.g. from conf.ini "[Mods]" section.

Best regards - Mike

Thanks Mike, it certainly would seem to make more sense - then the view distance could be optimally tweaked according to the mission scenario. Are you boffins over at BAT considering implementing this?

+1
similarly to what you said above:  "tweaked according to the pilot's PC capability"...
