Trains in the fmb +
« on: November 10, 2016, 04:12:26 AM »

While working on Java's rail system I would do the following things.

Place track in fmb+ not on map_T
Detail the track area with fill to make areas gently sloping if not level.
Check for any kinks on to the landscape using fill as well.
You know if there is a slightly raised corner section up on to a slight hill.

Level it all out as much as I can with easy slopes using fill  if not level :D

Try with a mission to test a train and when you plot the train's course it only reaches up to the first turn starting at the beginning or at the end as well.

You can't go past the first turn using  key central to plot its course.

Road works are all not a problem placing them in fmb+ as well.

Any suggestions/ideas what would cause this

I find it easier placing tracks and roads in fmb+

Cheers
Kirby

I did not understand anything !  :-X
Want to do roll a train on static objects "railways"?
It is very easy to do.  ;)

When I place a line (track) direct from fmb+ then make it level/ gently sloping using fill to level out sharp hills/slopes all ok until trying a mission.

Placing a train in a mission in game normal set up starting at the beginning of the line I can't place a train (way points) past the first corner on the line to follow on the entire line plotting the line with train way points.

Doing this normally with a road is not a problem and the vehicle convoy rolls easily along the entire road for miles.

Ah! This is a problem with the map builder...
However if you want to test a mission with the trick by FabianFred ...  http://gvla.perso.neuf.fr/IL-2/Faire%20rouler%20trains.pdf
But it is a translation in French!  :-X

Merci  ;) :)

Definitely the problem there

I get the gist of it using a Gaz and changing it manually to a train in the mission log files

Sweet  ;) :)

You learn something new every day.  ;) :)

I recall years ago he did a shunter yard train similar to this on his Burma map.

Cheers

Well,

Tested on another map just to see if it all goes well before testing on Java

It definitely does the trick  :D ;)

I also translated your French pdf to an English version pdf  :D

I translated it on line.  ;) ;)

:D The translation is very approximate!
I have the same problem to translate French to English!  ;)

The original was in English. But I can not find FabianFred's post!  :-X

Even in the world of running trains everywhere (mine...!) you can run into non-crossable landscape.
I am yet to find a definitive equation which could explain it but terrain bumps and the proximity of some objects, sunken in particular seem to have an impact. There are also different behaviour for different vehicles.
Using the "trains everywhere" trick regularly, it is amazing to see some of the tight bends the trains can conform to.

Back to map techniques I tend to flatten the ground using map_h if I want a flat airfield or a flat base on which trains are to run.
Recent work on Sinyavino was done this way, a big flat swamp with lots of rail lines. It helps for the peat bog objects (flat 2D airplates-like) as well to avoid the flickering.

I also have a much softer map_h than what I used to have in previous attempts, ie Gaussian blur on the file. And also lucky that Leningrad Oblast is quite flat, certainly not "Western Alps", "Korea", "Caucasus"...
