1942 Darwin, Dili, Ambon and Ceram Island NT Shallows/Reefs
« on: November 25, 2016, 05:47:16 AM »

Just an important note concerning the Java Stage 1 map.
This will take a lot longer to achieve as I am keen to learn and make a genuine population package for the area of roughly 25 or so objects.
While waiting for stage 1 of the Java map this map has been on the back burrner for some time.
If I want to take a break from the Java map I always go to this one.

Welcome to 1942 before the first Darwin raid

Darwin, The Northern Territory, Australia, Dili East Timor /Portuguese Timor and Ambon with Cerum Island Oil Fields as well as surrounding islands of Cerum Island of The Dutch East Indies.

This map should easily be out around the end of January.

The Northern Territory

99.5 percent complete with
Darwin town populated
Parap Civil Aerodrome
RAAF Station Darwin
Batchelor town populated
Batchelor Civil Aerorome
Scenic textures of sandy beaches, muddy mangroves, wetlands, typical Northern Territory bush and rough, rugged, hilly bush completed. All hand painted on map_h used as a map_T

East Timor / Portuguese Timor

70 percent complete
Dili main administration center near completion.
Dili main aerodrome complete
Main scenic textures of rugged mountainous areas, forest and agricultural areas complete.
All textures painted on a map_h for a map_T
Final detailing of agricultural areas to do
Agriculture population areas to do.
Further final detailing of East Timor and surrounding islands
Roughly all complete in another week or so.

Ambon, Ambon airfields, Cerum Island and Oil fields ALL to complete
This would take place in late December through January.

Anyway most of the main objects used for my version of Darwin 1942 was Neil Lowe's Darwin Objects.
The pictures below of Darwin in the 30's and RAAF Station Darwin upon completion gave me some very good insights along with lots of info of Parap and Batchelor civil dromes.

Cool pics of Darwin in the 30's and RAAF Station Darwin when complete

You can easily see Neil's cool hangars there and the very neat tower/water tank
Here are some images of the Northern Territory Darwin, Parap, RAAF Station Darwin, Batchelor and Bachelor civil aerodrome

Scenery

East Timor and surrounding island about another week or two.

All while learning converting a sketch up model to 3dMax to Gmax to finally IL2 shhewww  :D for JAVA

Great impressions mate! :P :)

BTW, could you pm me the last state of Alaska maybe? I miss this map after my recent rig crash for fast jet action, very nicely fitting to Mig-21s and 50s jets. Your cold never released maps are the only winter maps I fly. (and the one from Klaus109)-.

Cheers

For this project my main source of info is from a great book by Bob Alford  ;D

Darwin's Air War 1942-1945

An Illustrated History Commemorating The Darwin Air Raids

Also lots of historical pdfs, websites and photos from the net.

With Batchelor Civil drome the RAAF extended the runways after the first couple of raids and one runway was extended beyond a rail line.

It is the only airfield in the world with a rail line going through a runway.

That is to come at a later date.

Cheers

An Awkward Truth by Peter Grose and Darwin Spitfires by Anthony Cooper are also good books on the air ops at Darwin.

Since early December RL issues have cropped up to rear its ugly head.

We had an issue with an employee and I am doing her Hard Yakka job until the 11th or so  :o

Not much mapping has been achieved since early December.

I did manage to do some shallows work until this RL issue cropped up in November

Anyway here are some Shallows/Reefs shots for Melville Island and the Northern Territory along with Darwin and RAAF Station Darwin.

Some other areas were retextured and shallows/reefs added as well.  :D

Hopefully back to normal after the 11th or so (crossing fingers)

Genuinely hoping for more normal free time after the 11th or so

Cheers Kirby
