Strike Fighters II - an option?-for classic jets?
« on: November 28, 2016, 09:07:53 AM »

Hi chaps,

recently I had it again, the "I miss my classic jet fun dose" sadness.
ATM I do not fly BMS due to time restrain and lack of F-16 ambition atm.

I cannot afford the new rig nor time for DCS as well. ;)

Plus the jets I am mostly interested in are early 60s jets, maybe also up to early 80s.

So, while a quick review and research showed me Strike Fighters is both quite dated and also quite horrible on ground textures compared to our beloved modded IL-2, I stumbled over Strike Figthers Vietnam (oldest version as it seems) and Strike Fighters North Atlantic.

What I want:
be able to fly an F-11 Tiger. I think that one only exists as a mod, but there is one YouTube video showing it with a decent cockpit.
I like the Strike Fighters cockpits a lot.

Any tips welcome, my other alternativ is go for FSX and have the pain suffering the need to buy endless add-ons I cannot afford and well...I like simple solutions as I only want a relax jet alternative as good as possible. Of course hands down I'd LOVE to fly the DCS Tiger II with full blown options...but.-.not in the pocket atm.

 :P :)

I also have a few jet games on DVD, but hardly use them. I am having too much of a great time with IL2-1946+mods  ;D
There are a few great jets around here flying already ... AND there will be a few more surprises coming soon.  ;)  Modern jet stuff.
I cannot say what they are
 or I may face a firing squad  :D   but it is Great things to come !

The amount of good shit you can find for FSX available as freeware is not funny.

This is the closest I think you can get to what you want if you use FSX:

http://www.abacuspub.com/bundle-ultimate-military-cd-rom

Out of stock on this site, but it can still be found lingering in a rare Microcenter warehouse, if you're so lucky to be near one. Don't bother with Amazon, way overpriced for something this rare. I would imagine you could find it for cheap or free as a download since its so old now.

I've had this pack since I was little and had a lot of fun with it. Lots of fighters from USA, Britain, France, Russia, Sweden, etc. If you have a good rig, the graphics can be even more convincing than IL-2. The cockpits are decent, I recall you can even select and interact with some of the cockpit controls in FSX. There are quite a few nice pre-made combat and training missions that come with the pack as well, though they might seem cheesy after using IL-2 for awhile!

There are many great SF2 mods available at 'Combatace' which provide many new planes and greatly improved ground and environmental (sky) textures. There are mods available for Vietnam, Korea, Israel and many more.

Hi chaps, thanks for the feedback. :P

As for modded IL-2 and fast jets, I came to rather stop at the pre Mach 1 era. Except maybe for Mig-21s.
I also met the abovementioned forum...my stance:
I stick with IL-2 and 50s jets for now.

Used to fly LockOn earlier-nowadays DCS--which is what I will try in the future again..

Also have a long Falcon sim experience up to being a team member of the FreeFalcon team.
But well, I think up to today's modded IL-2 are only BMS and DCS and some rare FSX scenery mods.

Cheers

FC3 is the cheap DCS option, the planes have non clickable planes and it is the latest of Lock On. You get one of the P 51 and the SU 25T for free if you DL DCS world 1,5. And I like the SU 25T kind of a very modern IL 2 feel to it.
I never flew jets in old IL 2 that much, but I did like the Poltava campaign mud***** something with a F 84?
I spend most of my flying on choppers in DCS, because it is the best Chopper sim available counting all.
I am a bit empty, maybe a close to a long vacation from all sims myself. To me one can only repeat something for so long

Strike Fighters II is a great option for jet combat simulation (sim-lite really). A different experience to IL-2, BMS, and DCS (or at least Lock-On, my pc can't handle DCS), but definitely has it's place IMHO. Ground textures are awful, and mission building doesn't hold a candle to IL-2, but the aircraft models are gorgeous and the 'fun-factor' is enormous if you can handle the sim-lite aspect. The stock campaigns are great fun and dead-set easy to plug and play. Best for 60's and 70's jets, doesn't model more modern avionics very well.

A real thrill for me has being 'flying' both these aircraft on my pc. This pic is from a joint RNZAF/USAF exercise (TRIAD '76) when I was ten years old. My father had a (refrigeration engineering) contract on-site at RNZAF Base Ohakea and wangled a visit where my brother and I were able to sit in the cockpit of one of these F-4s on the apron. A-4Ks are "Models" in RNZAF vernacular (the TA-4K two-seaters are "T-birds") and are available as DLC from ThirdWire: https://store.thirdwire.com/store_dlc.htm

The F-4 "Rhinos" are great fun to fly and fight in Strike Fighters, with the radar in boresight mode, loosing off Sparrows and Sidewinders at the MiG menace (just keep the energy up, they dogfight like a bus!). One of the USAF pilots gave my family a copy of this publicity photo back in '76, since lost to time, but I recently found this version online.  :)

Here's some tips for a lightly modified install:

Extract the HUDDATA.ini from the FlightData.cat (cat file extractor can be downloaded from the Third Wire tools and utilities page here: http://www.thirdwire.com/downloads_tools.htm ) and make a couple of edits to improve the appearance of the game (making it less "arcadey"). This is from a previous post at KiwiSim.net:

Quote
Edit HUDDATA.ini:

[Font]
TextFontName=Arial
TextSize=14 <--------------------- smaller fonts make for a more tactical and less cartoonish info display. Would be interesting to experiment with the font too.

[SmallLabelFont]
TextFontName=Arial
TextSize=10 <-------------------- same here

Same thing in MESSAGESYSTEM.ini:

[Font]
TextFontName=Arial
TextSize=14 <---------------- here

The edited .ini's drop in to the 'Flight' folder in your mods folder.

The indicator cones are probably the worst 'sim-lite' offender (to me anyway) and the game looks much better without them. Just edit them out in HUDDATA.ini:

[Display001]
DisplayType=DIRECTOR
ObjectType=TARGET_ENEMY
ConeSize=25
BoxSize=10
BoxType=SQUARE
BoxColor=1.0,0.0,0.0,0.75
ConeModelName= <---------------------- leave the line blank after the "=" and NO ConeModel is loaded by the game engine. Hasta la Vista cones!

[Display002]
DisplayType=DIRECTOR
ObjectType=TARGET_FRIENDLY
ConeSize=25
BoxSize=10
BoxType=SQUARE
BoxColor=0.0,0.0,1.0,0.75
ConeModelName= <---------------------- and here

[Display003]
DisplayType=DIRECTOR
ObjectType=NEXT_WAYPOINT
ConeSize=25
BoxSize=10
BoxType=TRIANGLE
BoxColor=1.0,1.0,1.0,0.75
ConeModelName= <---------------------- and here

[Display004]
DisplayType=RADAR
PosX=0.865
PosY=0.015
Width=0.125
Height=0.16666667
Alpha=0.60
InitTime=2.0

[Display005]
DisplayType=DIRECTOR
ObjectType=RADAR_TARGET
ConeSize=25
BoxSize=10
BoxType=DIAMOND
BoxColor=1.0,1.0,0.0,0.75
ConeModelName= <---------------------- and here

I left the indicator boxes and waypoint triangles stock. I think they look quite tactical, and are worthwhile for the improved SA (squinting would only ruin my youthful complexion).

I've got the HUD Display and Visual Targeting options set to NORMAL, and subtitles OFF in the sound options. The game looks 100% better from stock, and plays really nice IMHO.

Dealing with SAMs 'n MiGs can be tough, and the best tip is to get down in the dirt in threat areas. I like to make my wingmen into elite lo-level ingress and egress specialists by modifying our aircraft for low-level AI flight, like this example (previously posted at CombatACE for the awesome F-104 mega pack):

Quote
Lastly, JaBo staffeln are elite units in my view, and low level ingress and egress are an important element in their tactics, so I have edited F-104G_GAF_DATA and F-104G_82_DATA for low-level AI flying.  Extract the data from your own AIRCRAFTAIDATA or use mine (Jul 2013 standard).  I inserted mine beneath [FlightControl] section :

The Bundesluftwaffe F-104 is one of my favourite aircraft in Strike Fighters II, you can find out more, including how to get the dual rocket pods working properly, here: http://combatace.com/topic/87748-sf2-f-104-starfighter-super-mega-pack-2016/

I use the low-level tip for all my wingmen: similar to IL-2, the AI wingmen can be pretty flakey, but to win a campaign you have to help them survive. Flying Hi-Lo-Hi missions you can get in, get the job done and get out again with your wingmen alive. When your wingmen aren't engaging targets they will try to match your altitude, even if you've become separated; ingressing and egressing at low altitude keeps everyone out of the SAM envelope, and the MiGs will struggle to engage you at low-level giving you a viable method to disengage from combat once the mission is achieved. At low-level even my non-ECM, non-RWR, non-countermeasures DLC A-4Ks can survive SAMs and MiGs in the "Rolling Thunder" and "Linebacker" Vietnam campaigns. Terrain following with your wingman looks dope too!

Another fun and easy mod is to customise loadouts (even assymetric loadouts) to simulate the operating procedures of your favourite squadron. This is from a previous post at KiwiSim.net about a series of T-6A Texan "Training Range" missions:

Quote
It's easy to create a custom load-out, and then edit the mission to include your custom load-out by 'default' for that particular mission.

To create a 'BDU-33' low-drag practice bombing load-out, just go to the Objects/Aircraft/T-6A folder and open the T-6A_LOADOUT.ini file in Windows Notepad.

Copy the [Attack] load-out and edit it to include the BDU-33 practice bombs. I kept the machine-guns and drop-tanks in my loadout so I can loiter over the range and have some strafing practice too:

[BDU-33]
Loadout[01].WeaponType=SUU11
Loadout[01].Quantity=1
Loadout[02].WeaponType=SUU11
Loadout[02].Quantity=1
Loadout[03].WeaponType=Tank_PC-9
Loadout[03].Quantity=1
Loadout[04].WeaponType=Tank_PC-9
Loadout[04].Quantity=1
Loadout[05].WeaponType=BDU-33
Loadout[05].Quantity=1
Loadout[06].WeaponType=BDU-33
Loadout[06].Quantity=1

Note: the 'name' of the weapon comes from the line 'TypeName=BDU-33' in the BDU-33_data.ini file (in the Objects/Weapons folder).

Now you can go to the Missions folder and edit the .MSN file (in Notepad again). Find the line:

Loadout=RECON

... and change it to:

Loadout=BDU-33

Restart the game and mission and - viola - practice bombs by default for the mission. You can customise your other missions likewise. For mine, this feels a bit more realistic to me when firing up a mission - it's not like the pilot normally gets free reign to pick any weapon he likes from his nation's arsenals - so I like it a lot this way!

All the best! :)

You don't *have* to have a dodgy 70s moustache to play Strike Fighters, but it probably helps! I watched these guys fly at airshows at Ohakea when I was a kid. The A-4s and Strikemasters practiced touch-and-goes at Palmerston North airport--I could watch them in the circuit from my bedroom window...

Thanks for the mass of info KiwiBiggles!  :)  :D Will come back to this in case I go fro Strike Fighters II. ;)
Indeed, the F-104 would be my fav single engine jet next to the F-86.
It was my first noticed jet as a child along with the T-38/F-5 family, along the F-4.

Hi chaps,

So, while a quick review and research showed me Strike Fighters is both quite dated and also quite horrible on ground textures compared to our beloved modded IL-2

 :P :)

Strike Fighters 2 has got some quite decent map upgrade packs which improve textures - at the Combatace site mentioned elsewhere in this thread. Unfortunately Combatace makes you jump thru a few hoops before you can even be allowed to download at a reduced bandwidth. But its worth it. I got a modded SF2 install which is incredible

Since you mentioned FSX, I just wish to point you in (not so) recent developments regarding use of weapons and systems. I also understand your thinking behind not spending on addons so what I'm mentioning here is not what you ask for. I just wanted to put it on the table for possible future consideration.

The Tacpack addon for FSX and P3D enables the use of weapons and destruction of targets in FSX. It also enables the use of systems like radar, locking of targets, IFF, chaff, flares etc. You can see the details here:

https://www.vrsimulations.com/tacpack.htm

As Tacpack includes an SDK several developers have developed planes able to use its functions and be able fire live weapons. Some of them are freeware, however you need to buy and install Tacpack first for them to work.

Freeware "tackpacked" planes have been developed by Rob Richardson and include early British jets:

http://www.robertjamesrichardson.co.uk/page3.html

As FSX is not built to handle AI as enemies or wingmen, this is most suited for online missions and there are several servers that you can fly into. For single player you can check out the developments of FSX@WAR team who are working towards a campaign style offering and already have some material to use:

https://www.fsxwar.com/

The FSX Vietnam War project is also interesting:

http://vietnamwar.project.free.fr/

I have been involved as a beta tester with the Milviz team for many of their FSX addons that incorporate Tackpack, like the F-86F, F-100D and F-4E and the fidelity of flight modelling and systems operation is amazing. They are though quite expensive addons due to the research involved behind them. Check these out here: http://milviz.com/flight/product_listing.php

What you get with FSX and P3D is the ability to fly these planes anywhere in the world and not in the confines of a particular map. Also you get to investigate all the inner workings of the real systems. It took me a while to be able to operate the F-4E radar, lock on targets and activate and fire Sparrows at them, but my first successful kills were quite satisfying, seeing an orange ball flash out of nowhere more than 20 miles out beyond visual range. So far there is no "gameplay" per se, or dogfighting smart AI like in the pure combat sims, it is more the pleasure to fly a plane you always wished you flew in real life, operate its systems and get a feeling very close to reality.

Having said all that, I always come back to Il-2 when I want to enjoy simple dogfighting and action, on line or offline.
