Hi Dimus,

Recently got FSX: Steam Edition (it was discounted to about 8 bucks, so I figured why not?) and really enjoy it. Stock aircraft and scenery are all good on my old machine, and I'm enjoying the stock pilot lessons and missions too.

I've been admiring the Milviz products from afar, the F-4 looks AMAZING, but for the time being they're beyond my hardware and budget. I hope the products and community are still around for my next pc upgrade (whenever that will be!). I've never really been tempted by multiplayer, but it looks like it would definitely be the way to go for FSX combat flying, as you say.

I shelled out about 50 bucks to get the Orbx edition of New Zealand's North Island. Amazing scenery, but right on the edge of what my old PC can handle.  My creaky old machine is fine with the Orbx scenery for general aviation (where things happen pretty slowly) but I start to run out of memory to refresh the scenery at military speeds. Trundling around the scenery in an old Cessna is a nice change of pace though.  :)

Orbx NZ North Island, Tongariro National Park and World Heritage area. I used to hike here when I was at high school (many, many moons ago!) and the scenery is very accurate.

Orbx have a sale on at the moment by the way (and the FREE demos are very good too!): https://orbxdirect.com/

All the best,
KB

Hi KB! The FSX steam edition is a good deal. I also got a fair amount of ORBX stuff during this sale. I make scenery and skins for FSX and P3D, mostly for my home country Greece, but I've also made some US and UK scenery for friends, among which the Fantasy of Flight site, Kermit Weeks' playground in Florida. You can check all my scenery and aircraft skins at Avsim if you search the library for ''Dimoulas'', all freeware.

As for the Milviz stuff, the F-4 is indeed on the heavy side, but the F-86E and the F-100D are surprisingly light on FPS, even on older rigs.

It's the weekend!!

It's the weekend!! At least, it is in the Shaky Isles!

Friday evening Free Flight in FSX: Steam Edition (with Orbx NZ North Island) flying north past the volcanic cone of Mount Ngauruhoe.

Heading south to NZRU (Waiouru Airport) past Mount Ngauruhoe.

Mount Ruapehu.

NZRU, Waiouru Airport. Not much to look at, but those foothills on the horizon are part of the Waiouru Military Camp... I hiked around here as a young fella too!

Nice landing, if I do say so! Mount Ruapehu in the background.

It's a different buzz to blasting around the sky with your arse on fire... and a chillaxing way to start the weekend!  :)

Have a great Friday!

Great shots KB. I have the south island scenery and enjoy it a lot.

Back on military ops, check out this video, made by a real F-4 driver that was part of our beta team at Milviz, testing how the RWR works against SAM sites:

and a tutorial on using the f-4 weapons:

Decided to download Shadowplay and Windows Movie Maker for a cheap and cheerful Strike Fighters 2 demo vid.  If you're curious, you can have a look before dropping down any cash: this install is stock except for the minor edits outlined on page one of this thread. The vid is a bit rough and ready, but you'll get the idea. Strike Fighters doesn't have replay function, so to make a vid you have to fly the mission and edit the in-game cameras all at the same time. It was a bit of fun trying out Shadowplay (free by nVidia) and Movie Maker (free by Microsoft) anyways, and IMO Strike Fighters is all about easily accessible fun gameplay. :)

Cheers,

What freaks me out the most (as a modder myself) about SF2 is that on it's biggest modding site (combatace.com) you're only allowed to download a few 100MB per day without a paid subscription.
Imagine we would do the same at SAS...
(No, we never will)

As a long time player of SF2, it is fairly ugly vanilla, but there are some incredibly good mods on combatace. New terrains, add-on planes, whole new eras like WW1 or the Korean war etc.

Still struggling to get some decent content from combatace in those small chunks I'm allowed to D/L per day...

SF2 is the flight sim I play most, equal with 1946.
I am a long time combatace user and I rarely met the download limitation, though I am not paying.
Basically, to start with, I suggest Eburger's campaign that offer a complete modification of the game in a limited number of files :
http://combatace.com/files/category/436-missions-campaigns/

and more specifically :
http://combatace.com/files/file/15166-sf2i-extension-pack-1-of-4/ (Israel)
http://combatace.com/files/file/15146-operation-desert-storm-for-sf2-redux-part-2-of-3/ (desert storm)
http://combatace.com/files/file/13336-nato-fighters-5-part-5-of-8/ (Nato vs WP in Europe)
http://combatace.com/files/file/10189-sf2v-air-ground-war-expansion-pack-v20-gold-part-1/ (Viet Nam)

Downloading the 4 links from your post already takes 4 days if not on a paid subscription, the campaigns are at least another day.
I'm not arguing, just saying...

Thanks for the links by the way :)
