SSD size - Recommendations Please
« on: December 17, 2016, 02:03:37 PM »

Hello Folks,

After a long time away from playing IL2 (since 4.09!), I decided to get back in the game!

I'm trying to find a reasonably priced SSD and install CUP with all the modules. I looked into the CUP manual and could not find a minimum recommended hard drive size for this.

Does anyone have a recommended size? Other than the CUP installation, I probably won't be installing too many skins, maps, other mods, etc.

S!

Well if you intend to also install your OS (Windows or Linux or whatever) on it, I'd recommand a 250/256 Gb one ...  ;)

In general, 128 Gb ones perform less and soon become too small ...

My own 4.09 install is now more than 56 Gb big, mostly because of a very heavy skin folder ...

I agree what Mick said. I have a 240GB SSD, and I can fit several IL-2 installs, 20,000 paint schemes, several other sims and games, and my OS.  :)   I am of course reaching the limit of available space on my drive, but I can always use the HDD as well.  I would certainly not get anything less than 240GB, even if you plan to use a "light" install!

I use couple of Samsung 512 EVO's - one for all my versions of IL2 (10 at last count!) and one for my operating system, programs etc. I like a bit of room to move!

I am still waiting for the SSD´s to reach the 1-terabyte mark and at a reasonable price. They are too expensive
at this moment and I can buy a normal disc-drive with 1 terabyte for only 60 euros! (tax included) and
only 89 euros for a 2 terabyte portable disc the size of a cigarette pack.

The difference in price and the amount you can store in them is much different.
I am sticking with the disc drives in the meantime. For the same price as an SSD card, I bought 3 1-terabyte portable
disc-drives  ;)
Do I need that many terabytes?
 yes, I do. I have ALOT of Il2-1946+mods goodies !  ;D

A bit offtop question:
have you time to go thropugh your all installed goods at least once?
I am asking because burried in map making, I have not time to go through all CUP goodies, even if I stopped to d/l new parts about half a year ago.
No objections, just looking forward to the time when I shall fly again, lol.

Will an external SSD hooked up to a computer by a USB 3.1 connection be as quick as an internal one.
(Note....USB 3.1, not USB3.0, or even USB2.0)
