Virtual memory size ?
« on: January 10, 2017, 04:41:19 AM »

Because this question was not too much noticed in the Lounge, I dare to copy it here, perhaps admins move the original post, too ? So:

What is the effect of setting the size of virtual memory on launching and running the Il-2 game and, especially on MapBuilder , please ?
I have 4 Gb physical RAM, WinXP, 500 GB SSD, 160 GB HDD,  and sometimes, when running the mapBuilder,  the warning appears that the size of lower virtual memory is not sufficient.
Is there any effect on the time MapBuilder is launching ?
It tooks about 3 minutes now, when lower virtual memory is set by comp itself to 2 Mb, upper one to 4 Mb.
And sometimes, repeated attempt to lauch is necessary, because the MapBuilder exits to the screen.

I have enough defragmented space on discs, but the question aims to this one:
CAN INCREASE OF LOWER VIRTUAL MEMORY HELP, OR NOT ?
Other ways were tested, so, please , do not discuss  it

In the normal case: No!

Hello Uzin,

Windows XP and only 4 GB of RAM is not a happy choice.

Mapbuilding in particular requires extremely much memory!

Even if you start from the "SSD"?

In principle, never set the virtual memory higher than 512 MB!

If you set the virtual memory higher than 512 MB, that only makes problems.

This happens if the virtual memory is set higher than 512 MB!

However, the virtual memory has no relationship with the load time.

Hopefully I understood your request correctly.  ;)

Best regards, Gerhard  :)

So am I to buy better comp? Perhaps I shall try to finish Yugoslavia map first, lol  ;)

Yes, SSD is divided into two partitions, one for WinXP and the other for MapBuilder .

Thanks for your time.

Are we talking about the IL-2 selector memory settings for the Java VM or the Windows Virtual Memory (swap file) size?

I am primarily interested in  MapBuilder, where no Il-2 selector is used, so I am primarily interested in the Windows Virtual Memory (swap file) size .
Thanks for precising the question, Istvan.

Swap file size its best managed by Windows imho.

You can improve your situation by updating win xp with service pack 2.
If you can update to Win7 or above and buy 4Gb extra RAM.

Thanks Istvan, again. My rig is about ten yrs old, motherboard might be limiting factor for upgrading, Graphic card is OK, SSD is ok,but perhaps is there no way how to improve the behaviour. What about to set the lower virtual memory size to that which is now at maximum? I have read that it might help a bit. My settings are (sorry, in Czech):

Btw, I have service pack 3 installed for WinXP.

Select "velikost urci systém" and see how it behaves. Your current setting limits the swap file to 4Gb.

Hi Uzin

"I am primarily interested in  MapBuilder, where no Il-2 selector is used."

I'm not sure I understand you correctly, are you not using IL-2 Selector when you are using FMB as a MapBuilder?

I accidently tried to open your Yugoslavia map with FMB in "MapBuilder" mode and then I got a memory error in the log file, I thought that error was a memory error for the Java VM. I tried to increase the Java memory but I haven't been able to open the Yugoslavia map in FMB in "MapBuilder" mode yet.

What memory setting do you have for the Java VM?

Best regards

Time for a few facts me thinks.

  • XP is limited to ~3.5GB of RAM.
If you have 4GB installed then this is what you get, you can't have more.
  • IL-2 is a 32 Bit application and as such it's limited to 2GB RAM for the whole il2fb.exe process.
I know there are "4GB il2fb.exe" versions floating around on the net but that's placebo.
It simply doesn't work for it cannot work.
You can do a rain dance around your PC, that'd help more than using one of these crappy hoax 4GB exe's.
  • Virtual Memory from an application's point of view describes the address space that can be addressed.
That's 2 GB on a 32 Bit Operating System, whether you add nothing, 2GB, 4GB or a quadrozillion Petabytes of swapfile space to it.
  • When you are building large maps, use the Selector, setup as much RAM as possible (1024MB is a good starting point, increase the value if need be) and choose the "Heap only" allocation strategy.

Best regards - Mike
