Time for a few facts me thinks.

  • XP is limited to ~3.5GB of RAM.
If you have 4GB installed then this is what you get, you can't have more.
  • IL-2 is a 32 Bit application and as such it's limited to 2GB RAM for the whole il2fb.exe process.
I know there are "4GB il2fb.exe" versions floating around on the net but that's placebo.
It simply doesn't work for it cannot work.
You can do a rain dance around your PC, that'd help more than using one of these crappy hoax 4GB exe's.
  • Virtual Memory from an application's point of view describes the address space that can be addressed.
That's 2 GB on a 32 Bit Operating System, whether you add nothing, 2GB, 4GB or a quadrozillion Petabytes of swapfile space to it.
  • When you are building large maps, use the Selector, setup as much RAM as possible (1024MB is a good starting point, increase the value if need be) and choose the "Heap only" allocation strategy.

Best regards - Mike
Mike.

Would you kindly provide an equivalent for users such as me on a 64-bit OS?

I for instance have 64-bit Windows 10 with 32Gb RAM.

I allow Windows to set virtual memory automatically.

Given that I have ample RAM I usually set the il-2 selector to 1Gb RAM. I sometimes try out 768 or 512 Mb, but do not really notice any difference.

Should I expect this?

Cheers.

Did you tried priority settings in task manager ?

I've tested priority settings before and never noticed any noticeable difference.
I'm used to long loading times and I'm content now when I can open the Yugoslavia map successfully.  :)

@lizard: Yes, that sounds reasonable. On a 64 Bit OS with plenty of RAM you won't run into trouble with IL-2 usually.
The only thing to keep in mind is that map building is a very special thing, where you will get best results when you use the good old "Heap only" allocation strategy from IL-2 selector and choose as much RAM as possible to keep your game going.

Concerning priority settings, the "normal" priority is the best you can use for IL-2.
Anything else has no effect (at best) or shows adverse side effects.

Thanks Mike. Pretty much as I thought, but good to get confirmation from an expert.

By 'map building' I understand 'creating new maps for use in the IL-2 environment'. I don't do that so will not personally be affected.  But good advice for others.

Kind regards.
