Objects near random trees...
« on: February 20, 2017, 02:57:10 PM »

Hi guys! What causes the trees to disappear when objects are placed near them? They show in unlocked FMB, but not in game. Is that a game engine thing? Can that be edited somehow?

This is what I am talking about, form the manual:

I made a test, building the Pensacola city... Trees show really nice in map builder, but not in game. If I place trees by hand, how will that effect the FPS over the city?

Hi Boyan,

can confirm this is a thing.  I hand place trees around airfields and other important locations to blend in with the terrain texture, although it does mean you always end up with a tree-less "band" surrounding the area containing your hand placed objects. I just go with what looks best to me in-game from the pilot's seat (taking into account the pop-up distance for trees).  Frustrating, but there you go...

Haven't noticed any frame rate issues with hand-placed trees.

Hi Boyan,

It is the normal behaviour of the game. You place any object in FMB+ and auto-generated trees will disappear around the object you inserted. You can see the trees in FMB but not when you fly.
Like Kiwi said, if you want to control the trees you have to place them individually in FMB+.

Use only "building.house$Furniture.TreeLine" in FMB+, do not mix and match with other trees. This way you can see the nice animated trees like KiwiBiggles has around his airfield when you run the game with the highest graphical settings.

If you mix and match, the nice trees will become invisible, but will still be present and you will get angry customers with planes exploding with no
apparent reason. This is a well known bug.

You should not get a drop in FPS but the actors.static file will grow and grow and grow ... 95% of the airfields I do for Leningrad-Volkhov are in or near forests (they used to hide the planes below the trees) so I use a lot of building.house$Furniture.TreeLine.

I wish we could have a "building.house$Furniture.10xTreeLine" which could generate a bigger bunch of trees and save on actors.static lines.

Practical example:

If you do not place trees by hand for this one near Staraya Ladoga you will be on the flat empty plains of central Mongolia without any trees around you, not in the deep forests of Karelia..... Very bad when you are in your cockpit.

In other words, when you place the trees by hand, it looks like this in FMB+ (this is Manushkino AF):

FPS drop will happen if you have too many complex, different objects in one spot. Try to put 2x, 3x, 4x more houses for Pensacola. You should hit your limit ....

Thank you guys for your answers! Pensacola city is full of trees, and classic American grid city is easy to do and place trees via tree.tga, I thought to save some time that way... Trees in the middle of the blocks, with buildings round them, too bad objects make trees disappear. Will do it by hand then, and at least I will have more control over tree placement.

I think that the auto generated trees are turned off for the city/country texture slots hence every city or village you build has to have manually placed trees.

Understood. Is there a way to turn them on for city textures perhaps? Is that the game engine thing, something that can`t be edited?

Hi, BOYAN,
you can spare time by making some typical blocks occupied with RowOfTrees, then selecting the whole block through Alt button and copy/paste the whole blocks.

Hi Uzin! Yep, did that with the blocks, plus rotation to make them look at least a bit different. Will do that with trees only, make a couple of examples per block, than copy and paste. I just hope FPS will hold as the city grows, with more blocks and suburbs...
