BAT and CUP Campaigns/Missions
« on: March 27, 2017, 10:20:02 PM »

Another retired guy here who decided to come back to IL2 and discovered the many years I was away, lots of things have happened!  After much research, BAT is just top of the heap.  I'm really impressed with it.  I've read through the forums here, and there is a lot, but its still not clear to me the state of BAT to older CUP Campaigns and Missions.

I have two IL2 setups, one for HSFX for playing IL2 1946 Campaigns and Missions, and also the oh so magnificent BAT (EP8) installation with its incredible era expansions.

For BAT, I read older CUP Campaigns and Missions "should" work, but I've also read some posts that caution that things have changed and "could" cause problems.  All this "should" and "could" is a bit confusing.  I know BAT is geared for "BEST" offline game play and some changes may be necessary to deliver a better single player campaign and mission experience.  I really appreciate that, but in the mean time...

I must ask the question if one should just wait till the older CUP Campaigns and Missions are "adapted" to BAT(CUP) before proceeding to installing older CUP campaigns and missions?  Or just go ahead and hope for the best, replacing with BAT versions when available?

Thanks

Have a fully updated version,VP modpack and BAT. Like you i'm ready for some missions/campaigns but don't want to mess things up. Mainly into VP and BAT (WAW). Interested in the Eastern Front, Battle of Britain and the Pacific campaign-(WWII buff) but only want ones that has been tested to work with VP or BAT. Can wait till this happens. Better safe than sorry.

Well, the good things about trying campaigns is that they cannot mess up your game in any way. The worst thing that can happen is that the campaign don't run, for instance if you don't have the right map. Trying won't make you sorry, I promise.

Every campaign created for the stock game should work, campaigns created for another modpacks need to be adjusted (if you load the mission into FMB log.lst will tell you what to adjust). This goes for both modpacks.
The truth is that if you want lots of missions for mod planes you have to learn basic FMB skills in order to be able to rework at least the existing campaigns according to your needs. You can also experiment with Lowengrins DCG or Asuras Modded Dgen for mod plane missions.

My honest opinion on this?
What you *should* do is use the game's actual abilities with full mission editor and learn how to make missions yourself. What you should do is look at .mis files with text editor and learn how to modify any mission or campaign that gives you issues for yourself. It is easy to fix any incompatible mission so it works in BAT.

The game will become 100% better for you and you will stop being dependent. I doubt that every campaign will be converted to BAT.

Hmm...

I understand the .mis file very well, and some missions are simple, some very involved.  Correcting object entries that may be ignored by BAT to objects that are acceptable is something I really don't want to spend time on.  Sure, changing aircraft type or aircraft flown is a breeze, but I rather not muck with it.

I was of the impression that BAT has expanded campaign options for design and I'd rather play those BAT specific campaigns then play older ones that "may" have objects missing and other things that I won't notice.

Sure, older campaigns playable, and if not, correctable, but why waste the time if a BAT campaign is still to be played?

I think you are living under false assumptions here.

BAT is basically 4.12 with expanding mods. So campaigns will be 4.12 with these mods.

You either wait until others create campaigns or play what already exists or play those BAT specific ones that are already and will be released over time.

+1  :) And the FMB is great fun, once you get the hang of it. And using it isn't like modding, which is a black art to many of us. Building campaigns or just updating them is WAY easier. It just requires some learning. Also: just opening and then saving a campaign in a 4.12 FMB will get rid of many of the basic errors and obsolete oddities from earlier versions. (But of course not all.)

The advice to learn the FMB is well received but please realize that many of us, for various reasons, are not into mission building or updating and consider the FMB another option for enjoying the game as are skinning and mapping and modding.
We certainly appreciate the efforts and the results of those who do though, you all have added massive enjoyment to IL2.

gmkump,
There are 2 campaign sets that SAS~Monty27 has rebuilt to BAT standards, one set for WWI in Dawn of Flight and one for The Spanish Civil War in The Golden Age.

39 WWI Campaigns here:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,48076.0.html

18 Spanish Civil War campaigns here:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,54493.0.html

He is also doing Battle of Britain for WWII but it is not yet available.

I am sure there will be many more down the line but that is a huge beginning.

The advice regarding trying the older missions and campaigns is also very good, I have COOP missions from 2002 that still work fine in BAT.

I've already fetched all the stuff posted for BAT.  And I have discovered many older CUP missions/campaigns work fine as well, its a try and see.  FMB is not too difficult to use for corrections, well some of it.  Others are beyond my current FMB skill base, I do what I can.

I know more pure BAT stuff is coming taking advantage of the extras BAT provides.  I've got plenty taking my attention if DOF right now, so very happy.
