BOS and BOM (with extra aircraft) is just too spendy for me. I just jumped on CLOD w/ TF Mod, because it was dirt cheap. I love it's eye candy, but I'll probably become bored with it because of it's faults and limited AC. Both BAT and the VP Mod opens up the entire world for game play at a very high realism (except for some eye candy)

IL-2 should already be dead.  It is amazing that it has continued to be used, and it is because of the modders and add-ons like BAT that keeps it going.  Eye candy is good and BoX would have totally replaced IL-2 if it offered the scope and breath found in BAT.  But it has not, and will not for some time to come.  I certainly hope it does.  I'm even looking forward to great VR one day.

Till then, I'm totally satisfied, even by todays standards, what IL-2 1946 delivers with the BAT upgrade, and oh yea, VP Mod as well.   These two offer the best flight simulator buffet found anywhere and it will still be around for some time to come.

It's hard to compare the two, you'd have to go back and view them at their respective stages of development.

I felt Il-2 was sterile and boring after playing sims like European Air War and Aces Over Europe back in the day, the whole Dgen career thing was bland and generic, the aircraft were strange. I wasn't a big fan of it at first but the realism made it fun enough with to play occasionally. I did buy Forgotten Battles and Pacific Fighters but I never bothered with them much, in fact I was extremely disappointed with it. They made no effort at all to flesh out the new plane set for DGen, just dumped more planes in the pack and that was basically it. When AEP came out I didn't bother buying it because I'd lost interest by then and Il-2 gathered dust and scratches until I discovered the joys of the internet, multiplayer and mods. The rest is history.

Il-2 BoX compared along the same lines as Forgotten Battles to start off with in that it didn't run well for me at first, the limited planes and "campaign" weren't impressive at all but I kept in touch because the flight physics have always been great and I knew that it would go somewhere eventually based off of how Rise of Flight evolved and how 777 had managed to eke out a niche for themselves pretty much against all the odds. The generational difference the initial release between old and new Il-2 is obvious, it's a quality product with painstaking attention to detail in the 3D models and environment. Both were groundbreaking in the way that they introduced physics modelling that is much higher fidelity than any competing title so there are certainly parallels between Il-2 BoS and Il-2 FB but comparing either one to BAT just doesn't make any sense. It's like comparing A swimming pool to the Pacific ocean.

BAT is the dreamers sandbox, if it has wings and shoots stuff you can fly it. (Provided you're capable of following the instructions requisite to getting it, working where I fail unfortunately often.) I have hopes that BoX will evolve to branch out over several theatres in time but the internet, business models, DRM and so much else has changed that I wonder if we'll see anything like BAT for a flight simulator ever again.

Il-2 PF + (moddability * community * years) = BAT
There are rumors that after Pacific (if they ever get there) they want to make BoX open. I hope it won't be too late for the sim to attract that kind of community interest which made Il-2 so great over time.

For single Player campaigns I am using IL2 DBW (with 24 bit Skins and JTMS sound mod), IL2 BAT, CLOD, BOS and BOM together.

DBW: best for big air battles with many planes, great variety of planes, maps and campaigns

BAT: improved graphics compared with DBW, great variety of planes, maps and campaigns

CLOD: limited planes / maps, I like the Team Fusion single Player dynamic campaign, nice graphics / flight model, runs very well on my Computer, AI sometimes very stupid

BOS/BOM: very expensive, good graphics, nice maps but few planes / maps

For a long wartime career I am starting a il2dcg career in DBW or BAT, after completing Polen39 and France40 il2dcg campaigns I will fly some Battle of Britain missions with CLOD and add the results to DBW or BAT by flying some dummy missions (with unarmed straight flying enemy planes). In the same way I add the results of my BOS / BOM campaigns to my career.

Are the maps for CLOD and BOS so much harder to make than the maps for IL2????

VP modpack should not be forgotten . My favorite expansion of Il-2 '46 as i'm really into WWII era aircraft. Effects and maps still look good to me and the sim has good immersion . For the best immersion and realism look no further than WOFF-UE . The best WWI sim and maybe the best combat flight sim ever. Just my two cents worth. Regards,Scott

When  BOS was in the test stage I told them on  forums that they should be careful not to mess it up like CLOD. That to get hung up in realistic engine management, or locked into a one theatre experience and forget about game play was a great mistake. Great graphics do not make a great game.  I was attacked by all the realism hungry Flight Sim players. I was told that perhaps I would be happier in the World of Warplanes. They failed to see that BOS and other such games were destined to become just a different version of World of Warplanes and suffer the fate of all single  battle themed game. They are just to limited and as such these games  quickly becomes boring to play due to being locked into a single environment. They begin to resemble a Pac Man like game where one is stuck in repeats of the same thing over and over just to get a higher scores.
I believe all IL2 1946 modded games are the best flight game / sim to date. They all are 1000 time more flexible than these newer releases. As far as I can see BOS. BOM and now Kuban as they now stand where designed and created as cash cows set in the RoF model. Nice looking but just a way to milk the players as a constant source of more money. This did not have to happen if Maddox had kept to his original idea of regular game up dates but he got infected by the money makers.

BAT is a far better flight sim for all players who want the ability to control, design and expand their game environment. It is made by dedicated players for dedicated players and offers a constant expanding world and this is what makes it a standout IL2 game.
Thanks to all who helped put  it together. It is you who have kept this game alive and by your action will continue to do so.

Hi Guys

I have the entire BOS "thoroughbred" stable running with Oculus Rift, and it is magnificent. I also run Cliffs of Dover on triple-screens at 6018 x 1080 resolution and it is awesome (IMHO the colour and lighting is superior to BOS and I look forward to the day when TF install VR support).
But, and it's a big "but", why do I spend most of my sim time with BAT ?
The answer is that it is by far the most absorbing, interesting and expansive flight sim in existence bar none. There are so many levels and dimensions to it, that it can be classed as almost a "lifestyle". To cover the range and scope of the various time periods and theatres are surely a lifetimes' quest and I believe it could easily be the subject-matter of a University first or higher degree.
Talking about VR and thinking about the possible future for BAT, has anyone seen the YouTube video with the guy running our beloved sim in VR - on a mobile phone-screen VR headset (actually a Google search produces similar examples for CoD).
I tried it and it works, though resolution-wise it's not quite there yet, but with some of these evolving android apps like Intugame and Tridef and the VR support software for O-Rift, like VorpX, who knows where it might lead.
BAT displays excellently on e.g. triple-screens, but VR puts you IN the plane.

Here's hoping.

regards Squash (Mike)

Been a fan of the CFS series since the beginning and only got into the Il-2 series sporadically. Just recently got into Il-2 '46 as just a break from CFS3 and am totally stoked and hooked. Can't believe all that's been done. BAT is the new KING of combat flight sims. Just my 2 cents    Regards,Scott

I also played BOS and it is an eye candy. For '46 I use the VP modpack, but since I also love jets ( I also fly DCS ) and VP doesn't include them I must add them to it. Btw, the MiG-21 mod is wonderful.  ;D 8) In the future I'm planning to switch to BAT which I prefer to the newer Il-2s.

Cheers  ;D,
