Dakota Assembly Ships
« on: May 26, 2017, 04:10:23 AM »

Does anyone know if C-47 has ever been used as an assembly ship? I want to start making assembly ship skins and I think Dakota would be a good choice for forming up formations of cargo/paratrooper flights. If it ever was used as one, a few pictures would be nice to have for reference.

I don't think that USAAF transport units ever had garishly-marked "assembly" aircraft like the 8th AF did.

Huge formations of transport planes were very rare during WW2, and they never had to form up into elaborate group or wing formations like the heavy bombers did.

Historically, there weren't that many assembly ships, either.

If you want brightly colored DC-3/C-47, then consider some of the Air Sea Rescue, Fire-Bomber, or pre/post-war airliner color schemes. I believe that there is still need for some DC-3 skins for civilian aircraft which were involved in combat during the start of WW2, like Pan-Am, TWA, KLM, QUANTAS, BOAC, CNAC, and possibly others.

Meat on the table for A5M2 or Ki-27 pilots (DC-2 in CNAC livery):

BOAC Flight 777, shot down over the Bay of Biscay by the Luftwaffe:
