Pardon my ignorance, but what is meant by "3rd party hosting".  I am trying to decide whether to jump ship from Photobucket or not.
As I mentioned I have a bunch of images (almost all are IL2 related) and am still able to post 'links' to images.  I haven't received any email or notification for any kind of payment with regard to 3rd party hosting.  Again, I'm not sure what that means as it (so far) is not preventing me from posting an image from PB to be displayed in a post here at SAS.

Can someone educate me please?   :-|

thanks,
Tomoose

I've just been looking at their terms and conditions.
If you sign up to a Basic Plan - Plan50 $5-99 per month then your are hit by the No 3rd Party Hosting restriction.
Possibly --- if you stay on the free plan -- you are not hit by that restriction.
Anyone know different?

I started receiving regular invitations to subscribe when I passed the 80% capacity limit. (80%x2GB)
Apparently if I download the app I will get an increase capacity to 8GB -- Should serve my needs for a while.
Just deleted a stack of map making images which were linked to the old defunct AAA site so no immediate problem.

Thanks Asheshouse, I figured it was something like that but wanted to verify.
It seems a bit counterintuitive to "penalize" paying customers as opposed to free-riders such as myself.  I would guess that because I'm only 11% of capacity it's not worth the hassle, LOL.

Third party hosting works like this:

You have a Photobucket (or similar service provider) account. This service hosts your images. You choose one to share by copying the code.

You then post a message onto this forum, with that code that makes the image show up in the thread.

That's called "Hotlinking".
Photobucket simply pulled the plug on it:
https://petapixel.com/2017/07/01/photobucket-just-broke-billions-photos-embedded-web/

For comparison:
Postimage.org has no restrictions on Hotlinking per definition (that's what they're there for).
Flickr allows Hotlinking as long as you link back to the image's Flickr page within the same post (for that reason, you are advised to use the BBCode they're providing to share images - I think I frequently forget to, but never had any issues nevertheless).

Best regards - Mike

I note this final sentence from the petapixel article
Quote
it seems fairly likely that others will follow suit and start charging for hosting files too.

So I guess I will carry on with Photobucket Free until it gets broke.

Postimage looks like a good alternative though.

Mike, I thought PB was the first party, you're the second because you supply the visible content the first party hosted, and when you use the first party hosted content on a forum, the forum becomes the third party.

If that's not Third Party hosting OK, but nobody's answering Tomoose's question.

You had answered Tomooses question in your previous post. I agree with all you have said.
PB - 1st party; Tomoose - 2nd party; SAS Site - 3rd party.

Didn't want to say I don't agree, I just thought I'd name it like it's being called usually.

I've just downloaded the mobile app for Photobucket and received an immediate increase in storage capacity to 8GB.  (up from previous 2GB for PC only access).
All this is with the free plan, so looks like I'll stick with PB for a while yet.

Hah hah! I spoke to soon. Got the email from PB this morning so all of my images here are now disabled. Years of image posting gone.
I will be changing to Postimage as recommended above. Will be changing the links on current threads but may not get around to the older stuff for a while - if at all.
