In an effort not to hijack this thread, I want to reiterate to Squash, what a wonderful map.  Don't be afraid to continue with what you have proposed. Don't limit yourself to "South Sumatra".  The entire island was involved in the disaster of the far east, from Lake Toba, where there was considerable fighting, for the genre, up to Padang on the northeast coast where a lot of the Singapore evacuees were escaping to, with quite a bit of air activity, mind you.

To Squashman, cheers and prost.

Many thanks Gubi,
You are a true gentleman - I love the interest that has been sparked and the enthusiasm from all.
May we all keep the spirit of this corner of the conflict alive.

It could be the footprint of an old airfield??

If you use the "show historical imagery button" then you'll get this:
possible Samarinda I by CzechTexan, on Flickr
Sure looks like an airfield to me.
But I'm also curious about the modern Samarinda airport located inside the city.  When was that built?  Would it be built on top of the old WW2 field as many are?  Or, was it built post-war?  Just curious  :-|

Hi CT,

I've looked hard, but can find no evidence there was an airport/airfield pre-1950. I t doesn't mean there wasn't one, and the locals ain't exactly eager to showcase Dutch colonial achievments. The previous airport was probably built on a wartime field, as so many were in the region. The maps I'm working off at the moment are early 70's and quite detailed. Unfortunately they don't show an airfield in the location highlighted by you and Squash. Once again, it doesn't mean there wasn't one but they show strip airfields in Balikpapan (sic) one of which is still visible. I lknow I do have earlier Borneo maps, I'll see what I can find in the other hard drives later :)

This write-up in Wiki sounds accurate - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samarinda_International_Airport

The U.S. Army map (SA 50-2) of 1954 shows "Samarinda" airfield near Melak.

I didn't see any other airfields around Samarinda city (SA 50-3).

Just a quick question: What version of Il2 does this run on? I'm currently using BAT up to and including EP12 and I can't save a mission on this map.

I tried the suggestion of inserting the files fb_maps21.SFS, fb_3do26.SFS, fb_3do27.SFS, from 4.13.3 but still no joy.

I extracted the fb_maps21.SFS, fb_3do26.SFS, fb_3do27.SFS, files and can see no reference to the objects in question:

buildings.House$FurnitureNGNBPalmAg1
buildings.House$FurnitureNGNBPalmAs1
buildings.House$FurnitureNGNBPalmAs2
buildings.House$FurnitureNGNBPalmAg2
buildings.Plate$NGNBGroundTurn
buildings.House$NGNBBlastPen5sides
buildings.Plate$NGNBGroundTaxiEnd
buildings.Plate$NGNBGroundTaxi
buildings.Plate$NGNBGroundRunway
buildings.Plate$NGNBGroundRunwayEnd
buildings.Plate$NGNBGroundParkingSide
buildings.Plate$NGNBGroundParkingCorner
buildings.Plate$NGNBPac_GrHardstandLarge

Perhaps my sfs extractor doesn't extract all the files?

If someone could make a download of those objects, or maybe point me in the right direction to find them, I'd appreciate it; I'm so looking forward to using this map.

Thanks in advance.

Well , I spent all night on it, and I can't find any reference to an original Samarinda 1 airfield. I've started looking at 3 other locations, one of which was on a pre-war map ( Soengaiterim ) which is a bit far from Samarinda, but there again, so is Samarinda II. Muara, NE of Samarinda is a more likely candidate.

I happened on another Borneo airfield by accident, looking for Madang, Java and GE dropped me into Borneo. This location is marked as an airfield on NEI maps   2°47'5.70"S 115°18'50.27"E  . At first glance is looks a bit short until you go ESE and the rest of the airfield is revealed especially on a 2013 rollback on GE. I can't find anything on the usual websites , but there it is with a distinctly pre-war circle and bisecting runway layout. Another thing I've noticed is cleared spaces appearing on legends on maps. I'd never thought about them in terms of airstrips/airfields before but I suppose it should be considered if they're long/wide enough?

I'd appreciate it if other people could take a look, if only to confirm discount it as an airfield?

Many thanks

Hi Bob

I have tested the Java map in my own heavily modded versions of; Modact 5.3, CUP (expanded up to part 22), HSFX 7.03 and Bat - no problems with any of them.
Did you check to see if you could load the 4 DT maps of NBNG into the game - (use the same all.ini entry as in 4.13)
I used some objects from these maps in the Java map.
