Operation Chastise
« on: August 28, 2017, 09:27:20 AM »

So, I might be reinventing the wheel here but I'm wondering a couple of things...

1.  Is anyone interested in a single mission depicting the Operation Chastise raid on Möhne dam?

2.  Would anyone be interested in providing me with any info they have to help me build such a mission?  I learned yesterday how to build a (very simple) mission, and I had it working with a Lancaster (the mod with the upkeep bomb) flying towards the dam at 60ft, with 4 Flak 88s on and around the dam firing at said Lancaster.  Although when I engaged the AI it decided to climb and start circling the area (so that's a problem which will need to be resolved)...

However I have no idea of exact locations of the AAA around the dam, or of any locations on the way to the dam - I was considering building the mission to start on the ground at RAF Scampton (?) with a flight of Lancasters, then have them cross the channel and fly the exact route taken, obviously though there would be AAA all along the way to place and I have no idea where to place them.  And Google is not much of a help either.

I'm also guessing I need to place buildings and other static objects?

That is a very good idea Raven Morpheus, not only a single mission but a mission set or a campaign including some good training.

I found 3 dams in the La Chute map:

Mohne Dam: Grid CH-17
Eder Dam: Grid CO-13
Sorpe Dam: Grid CG-15

Attacks took place at night, and night missions already are a hell of a challenge (flying a Lanc 20 meters above water at night? Heck no!) so there could be some what-if desperate daylight missions as well.

This site has good info for a start: http://www.thedambusters.org.uk/

With the Lancaster B.III-Special made by our friend from free moding it will be great and a real challenge. I wish you good luck for this project.

Thanks for that link, I have come across it already - that's about the only helpful thing I found via google.  Whilst there is a map of the route, including close ups of the Möhne area showing the direction of attack on Möhne (I only looked at the info for Möhne as I didn't know the other 2 dams existed on La Chute) unless I'm overlooking something there's very few details (if any) on where/how many Ack Ack batteries were encountered on the route to/from Scampton though.  Apparently (might have read it somewhere else) there were only 12 batteries around the immediate dam area, a mix of 88s and 20mm Flakvierling.  But that's all I can find out at the moment.  I know for the majority of the route it's not such a problem as major known Ack Ack installations were avoided, but they should still be placed on the map for the mission anyhow imho.

Good find on the other 2 dams, I didn't realise they were on the map.  That's all 3 of the dams bombed in the raid (isn't it?), so I guess, if I could work out where to place the Ack Ack along the entire route, what buildings to place on the map, what other statics to place (I'm still guessing I need to populate the entire map with all of that sort of stuff?), 3 missions could be made simulating the attacks on each dam, perhaps as a mini-campaign, with a "meanwhile at..." kind of video between each mission.

I don't have a clue where to put the ack ack or buildings or anything else though and the more I look into this the more I think it's a bit beyond my knowledge/skill to create such missions on my own...

A few other things lead to me this conclusion - firstly there's the issue of the AI (when I engage it) climbing to above 20m - I know from the bomb aimers position we can fly the plane, but other AI planes will probably exhibit the same behaviour, making it pointless telling them to fly at 20m!

Secondly I'm not even sure you can make it so a "mission complete" trigger can be triggered - I can see you can set a target (in my test mission, which I deleted due to initially shelving this idea, after seeing what my AI pilot was doing, I set it to "destroy ground and 25%"), but I've no idea how that target marker works or if it will work with the upkeep bombs - I never got as far as testing that target marker as I gave up on building the mission when I saw what the AI was doing when I engaged it!

And of course we'll have to imagine the dams have been breached because (again I'm guessing here) the static objects on the map won't actually show any signs of damage.

Oh, and there's no 617sqn selectable in the squadron lists anywhere in the game...
