Modelling Engine Flaps

Not sure how to go about modelling  this.
Blackburn Skua has the common type of segmental rotary engine flaps arranged around the surface of the engine cowling.

When closed the flaps form a cylinder. When open there is an overlapping sliding cover bridging between each section, so what you would see is a cylinder shape transforming into a conical shape. No gaps between the segments. --- Perhaps I am getting too detailed and just need to model each segment  and accept that in the model a gap will appear?

I would be interested as well. I was thinking of continuing the work on MiG-25 and... well, jet engine nozzle works exaclty the same.

If close-up photos are found, we can know historical shapes ......

perhaps those overlapping ?

Thin linking pieces bridge the gap between each part of the flap.

The simplest way of doing it might be to duplicate the plates you have already created.

Make the second set wider to fill the gap, then move them slightly towards the central axis of the aircraft until they are not visible when the flaps are closed.

Animate them with the same code as the ones you have already done.

The key to making this work is to then apply a different material to the new flaps and use the material properties to stop the nasty artifacts that will appear.

I suggest at least a depth offset on the material, possibly disabling depth writes as well.

I am a bit concerned that the depth offset will not be applied correctly, but in my head it would work.

Maybe just model flaps segments as normal and also model the thin bridging pieces as seen in the image above. The thin parts would be positioned slightly in front of the main segments.
I'll try that first and see how it looks.

Model one segment flush to cowling and use Array tool to model the others.

If you want animations you will have to reset pivot on each segment. :)
