Hello Rasta

My profound apologies! You are, of course, quite correct about the naming of Lunga Airfield

I'm afraid it's been a long time since I looked at my maps and it seems I got the names confused!

I will produce a new October 42 map, but due to a busy schedule over the next few months, I'm afraid I can't give you a completion date.

Best regards

Oh, thank you very much!
It happened much quicker than I expected, considering how busy you are.
The map works fine in BAT.

Unfortunately, at the time of my request I had not yet explored everything thoroughly. And since then I have noticed another problem with the Japanese airfields...

Each of your seven maps includes all seven Japanese airfields near Rabaul: Vunakanau, Lakunai, Kerawat, Malaguna, Tobera, Rapopo on New Britain and Rakanda on Duke of York Island.

But
the Japanese built the Rapopo airfield during December 1942 to early January 1943,
the Malaguna airfield (actually part of the road) was built by early 1943
the Tobera airfield was built during July 1943 by August 1943
the Kerawat airfield was built in September 1943
the Rakanda airfield was built during late 1943.

This is confirmed by the pacificwrecks website and the set of airfields on the serie of four New Britain maps from DT (March 1943, September 1943, January 1944, June 1944).

PNG 1942 TomcatZombie/DPeters95 map has the wrong set of airfields.
Tokyo Rose on the Green Hell 1943 map, apparently, wanted to place the maximum number of airfields.
The Rabaul map by Bee shows airfields in 1944.

In addition, the Kieta airfield on Bougainville Island was built before the war.

Accordingly, ideally it would be great to

on the map sq_Coral-Sea_Solomon-Sea_Aug-42 remove the airfields Kerawat, Malaguna, Tobera, Rapopo, Rakanda and add the Kieta airfield.

on the map sq_Coral-Sea_Solomon-Sea_Oct-42 remove the airfields Kerawat, Malaguna, Tobera, Rapopo, Rakanda

on the map sq_Coral-Sea_Solomon-Sea_Dec-42 remove the airfields Kerawat, Malaguna, Tobera, Rakanda

on the map sq_Coral-Sea_Solomon-Sea_July-43 remove the airfields Kerawat, Rakanda.

Perhaps one day it would be possible...

As I understand it, all the seaplane bases present on the maps already existed by August 1942, but some of them were already abandoned - for example, Deboyne SPB.
It is difficult to find exact information about the time of use of many SPBs, so it is possible to correctly place them on all maps.
Or not?
Gizo SPB, was used only in March-July 1943. At the same time, if it is missing from the Aug-42 map, then, perhaps, it should be removed from the Oct-42 and Dec-42 maps too?
I will be glad to hear other opinions.

I apologize for my impudence and my poor English.
Please do not take this as a dissatisfaction - I simply wanted the most extensive work of all available on this region to have the greatest historical accuracy.

Hi Rasta

Thanks for your research.
The changes you suggest will be quite easy to do, though I can't give you a timeline.

I would think that the TakeOff and Landing Points should simply be left on all the Solomons Maps.

Just my 17$ worth ( inflation , you know )

I agree with Kopdorfer. Leave the takeoff and landing points and trust the mission makers to use the correct locations in the correct timeframes.

Thanks Guys

Interesting to have some additional input. I would be keen to know what the wider community view is on this subject before I make the changes.

My own view is to always err in favour of veracity wherever possible. The Coral Sea, Solomon Sea project was so large both in scale and execution that I always new there would be compromises in certain areas - for example, I couldn't quite manage to get 1:1 scale, but felt that 0.99:1 was acceptable. Now, however, with a total of seven maps, ostensibly depicting the historical flow of Operation Cartwheel, I feel that the placing of airfields should be historically accurate and where my own research on airfield placement has been shown to be inaccurate, then this should be corrected.

I agree @Kopdorfer, that there is a good argument for leaving Gizo and other seaplane bases as they are, simply because landing/takeoff areas in litoral waters exist regardless of on-shore or other facilities or historical date. The same cannot be said of patches of jungle where airstrips have to be built and maintained. Thus, it is important for their construction dates to be reflected in the maps

We are blessed having so many maps available to us mission builders.
The updates D.Rasta suggests are good and thankfully easily implemented, I think if the airfield is removed then possibly the underlying texture may also need changing.
Runway and taxi points can remain as there's an option to hide unused airfields in the FMB which I used in my Jackson's Few campaign to hide the numerous airfields on the Green Hell map which had not been built during March/April 1942.

What did you find the best way to hide airfields in FMB?

G'day mate

I may of been a bit misleading, both Kopfdorfer and vonofterdingen mentioned leaving the runway and taxi points.
My suggestion was simply referring to hiding unused airfields only in the navigation map, unfortunately this also hides enemy airfields.
I now use a static camera which places a nice red X on enemy targets.
