VIDEO: Martin B-26 Marauders on Guadalcanal - Single Player
« on: December 04, 2017, 09:07:22 AM »

GROUP: 70th Bombardment Squadron - February, 1943 -  Henderson Field, Guadalcanal
TARGET: Japanese seaplane base at Rataka Bay, Santa Isabel Island.
Bomb Altitude: 7,000 ft. Speed: 200 MPH
RESULTS: Unsatisfactory - Parts of the installation seen burning, but most bombs fell short in the jungle.
Additional Notes: Attacked by 8 Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa "Oscar"s out of Shortland Island during bomb run.
Had to fight a running battle until they broke off. My gunners shot down 3.
Afterward you can see my instruments showing the oil pressure dropping on the left engine and the oil temp going up on the right until it quit.
Had to fly back to Henderson Field and land with one engine.
For me this was a true Marauder Mission - demonstrating the fire power of a tight formation and the B-26's capacity for taking damage.
I was glad when this one was done.

Special thanks to Ranwars, Epervier, VPMedia and all the talented Modders that make this possible at SAS.

I'm not able to attach a file and the mission code exceeds the limit here, so here are some notes.
Mod: VP Modpack -
Map: Guadalcanal Late ( or Solomon Islands Late, one of those )
Plane: Martin B-26
Creating the mission:
1. Of course, research and create your target somewhere.
2. Where the copra grove is next to Henderson Field, put a bunch of palms and tents next to the taxi-way along with a bunch of static objects for immersion. ( the more palms, the worse your FPS performance will be - requires testing )
3. Put Your bomber on the field with appropriate taxi path and waypoints for take-off. Add AI planes to follow you ( Immersive, but can cause glitches and requires testing )
4. Create your AI "squadron" by placing  formations in close proximity to each other with the same weapons, altitude, speed, skin, markings and skill. Use different nose art for each plane. ( set the skill for EVERY PLANE to "ACE", or they don't fly as well. ( not the enemy, however..make them "aces" and you'll find out why )
5. Set squadron 1st waypoints as desired for the initial "buncher" leg and fly-by on the airfield. For my B-26 boxes, I put them in front of one another following the exact same vector with waypoints exactly the same so they stay together. ( this also requires some testing ) - all the way to the target and back to home base.
6. Ad enemy formations to intercept - paying attention to time readouts on way points so they can intercept when you want them to. They will be there and will attack if the final waypoint is the interception coordinates, and their AI will take over.
NOTE: Put the squadron far enough away that you have time to get into the air before they overfly the airfield..so you can join up after take off.
7. When you have it all set up, run it and check for problems. If one of your taxi-mates crashes on take-off - don't be dismayed, that really happened..a LOT.
ONE LAST NOTE: place static cameras in good position to get video rushes and make a movie from the playback..that's a good motivation to fly the entire mission.
ONE LAST LAST NOTE: When you are flying over the vast ocean distances you will want to increase time compression and break formation a little until you get near the target or you will be sitting there over water a LONG TIME!
Happy flying and good luck!
This is a typical bombing mission by a small group, thousands of such raids took place on all sides during WWII.

Why don't you try this link to post your mission?  8)

This link allows you to post LOG too long... so it can also be used for other things!  ;)

Apparently, I can post the mission code on my website.
https://bureauofinternallanduse.com/il2-guadalcanal-code/
Any questions, I'll try to answer, but expect the unexpected.
ALSO: Having everything go perfectly is not the objective.
The objective is to take off (regardless of how it all goes - planes may crash and collide - this really happened with Marauder groups so you have to be on the ball ) join up, follow the formation and reach the target, then command the other bombers to drop by using the tab key to set them,
 >  tab/7/6/8  <
Then the other planes  ( except flight one ) will drop when you drop..and remember where you are in the formation.
I stay in the rear and drop short because I have the formation strung out for a mile in front of me.
Results aren't always good..but that's how it really was.
We still got up and tangled with the enemy.
Speaking of which: when I fly this mission, I don't take the gunner's position during the flight because I'm too busy staying close to the rest of the formation.
Others may have a different experience if you go on auto pilot and do some gunner stuff.
The shots in the video are from the replay.
I have to say.. I'm grateful my gunners can shoot.
One more enemy fighter attack and I think I would have had to ditch or hit the silk.

Almost forgot.
Not sure if anybody is trying to fly this mission or if this is critical, but I did change one thing.
If you watch the vid, there are a bunch of soldiers looking at a news board when the B-26 does the fly-by.
I changed the graphic on the board.
There's a mapboard object in one of the VP Modpack SAS static ground object folders.
(  in a folder  #SAS\STATIC_BUILDINGS_MAX\3do\Buildings\Battlefield\MapBoard_01  )
I can't upload a TGA file here  - so here's a jpg and you can convert it to a TGA and put it in that folder so you have a "Solomons Islands Dope" news board:

Happy Flying!
