Not exactly a Newb, but new to IL2
« on: December 25, 2017, 03:29:39 PM »

I've got a few years of sim modding, I mostly do 3D and some texturing my main interest is in WWI and pre WWI aircraft.

I presently work in FlightGear,  some screen shots of some planes I've modded or made..

Bristol Scout D

AVRO 504D

Voisin La3

Maurice Farman 11

So..

What exactly does one need to get started with DBW-1916?  I suppose the big question is, do I have IL2,  well, no I don't, but  I suppose it can still be bought on Ebay?

Maybe a gentle nudge towards the best part of this forum for better answers would be appreciated.

 Festive greetings,

fester

A copy of IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 is needed before you can go any further.

I just googled the game and it's presently on sale at the Steam Site for a mere $2.74 Canadian.

A small issue regarding you purchasing it and then wanting to install DBW is the base game needs to be Version 4.10.1 to run DBW and Steam sells version 4.12.2.

I found a copy on Amazon for $7, I'd prefer to get the disc.  Would modding IL2-1946 to DoF be a better option? the amount of IL2 SAS mod options is a bit bewildering.. :o

I'm also running XP, it's a decent enough gaming PC though, lots of .hdd space.

Check your inbox. I just sent you a PM.

Getting DOF is in my opinion the better choice.

I really like WW1, had DBW installed but now have BAT installed and I think DOF is better.

As for running XP I do as well and there seems to be no issues except for the fact I'm limited to DX9 for graphics.

For XP just need to have a good graphics card more than anything.

If the images I posted give any indication, I'm running the a fairly recent OpenGL version with a lot of shader support and moderate antialiasing. I can crank the visibility out to almost 25~40 miles. I believe I have DX9 installed.

Thanks.   It's modded from FS-WWI and is really well done as stock for having a fairly moderate polygon count. Two liveries

We can select and change them while flying in FG.  I've got a Sop Tabloid and Baby on floats.

More screenshots:

I made a couple Alsace region aerodromes in FG, one is Corcieux, which is somewhat infamous for it was where one of the Escadrille Lafayette pilots lost his life after running cover patrol for Happe's MF29 raid on Obendorf.

Unca-Fester, there's several ways to get into flying WW1 in IL-2.

My preferred method is to fly the complete DBW-1916 in its 4.10.1 original setting. I just like it better. You'd need the whole DBW/UP3 settup for that, then update the DBW-1916 to its latest version, plus add in manually several aircraft that were released sense then.

Alternatively the D.O.F. (Dawn of Flight) module in B.A.T. i hear is very nice as well. The case for either setup can be made. BAT kills my computer, plus i keep a working UP3 for online flying, so i run DBW-1916.

best luck!

Fresco I'll admit I'm a little odd, I like underdog aircraft.

Most of my favorites are French pushers like the Voisins and Farmans.   RedBaron3D patched with the Western Front Patch spoiled me with the 1915 BE2 and Farman F40 campaigns.

I noticed that DOF has a lot of early war planes,  I'm kind of like a kid on Christmas  really looking forward to flying this sim.

That makes two of us !  :D
I would recommend DOF as that's where all the new WW I development is taking place....
As for early a/c...flying the Demoiselle, the Blackburn, the Bleriot 11 and the Farman 4 are a real blast  8)
From your screenies it looks like you'll also enjoy the Maps in DOF...the early & late Somme maps are a stunning
This is a interesting new project.... https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,50404.48.html   reply #51 0n

Same here Unca-Fester! I love the Underdogs. Be2c, the Farmans, and the monoplanes are among my favorites! I also like the lines of the N.11 Bebe, the Airco DH.2,

I think an early Fokker series (D.I, D.II, D.III), the Halberstadt D.II, and the Bristol Scout are among the most important types we miss from the Great War.
