Search lights on aircraft.
« on: December 28, 2017, 04:12:54 PM »

I'm thinking about making some of our planes with search lights. Such as coastal command planes and others.

Here I've added a pair of lights to the front turret of the PBY4-2......

Also in the pic is the planes landing light on the wing.

Please let me know if any of you are interested in this idea and if so, what planes should have them.

Hi ! And thank you for the offer ;) I would be interested, as I am for any suggestion about submarines hunting and night fighting devices (or both :P ) ; I guess you're suggesting it could be used as 'Leigh light' device. Wikipedia mentions such equipment on Catalinas and Liberators (nacelle type, mounted under starboard wing I think) and Wellingtons (in a belly-turret mounted device). I have found a few pictures to follow the famous 'request rules'.

It leads me to a question about the use of the light by the IA or the player : is it like a weapon the IA gunner will point on enemy planes/ships like a machine gun, or does it act more like a landing light ? I can imagine a 'turbinlite' option in this case, if it can be used as a fixed turret in front of a Douglas Havoc or (at least one, reportedly) Mosquito Mk II.

Doesn't the Neptune have one?

It's very possible (on P2V-4 ?), and the P3A Orion too (and I may have seen an AD-5 Skyraider with such a device under port wing). But I have no knowledge about their operational use.

Thank you guys for your replies. As far as in Il2 the only working "search light" on an aircraft is on the AH-1 Cobra that CWatson and I did years ago. The lights are landing lights attached to the gunner's turret and move with said turret. I want to try to add a turret to a gunners turret but make it " hidden " then move it's position out on a wing but still move with the gunners turret.

If we can come up with a list of planes, I can see if it can be done. It would be nice if someone can make or locate a fitting object like a search light to attach to a plane as well.

+1 for the Neptune, would be fun in Korea/Vietnam scenarios too. I think this is a great idea, though I have to research more on different planes and operations.

The P2V-5 mod that is included in UP3 RC4 already has a fixed working searchlight.

I should have worded my question in a different way.

Searching right now. I can't make it myself, but I'll think about the options. The Leigh light looks a little like the Walter HWK 109-500 (RATO device used by Ar-234), without the chute on the front end of it. I remember a glass-nosed fuel tank mod used for P-38 as a mod, but it looks much different.

Hello. Sorry for my bad English. Very interesting and important topic! I'm trying to create a working floodlight for ships. Based on the class of weapons of air defense, it was possible to create a working searchlight. Instead of the shot flash effect, I added the msh of the searchlight beam and added the lines of the new gun to the ships.ini. The resulting searchlight is very imperfect. It only works during the day, shoots and damages the target, it works in flashing mode. Unfortunately, I do not know java well, and nothing better, I have not succeeded so far.

Hi SAS~Bombsaway.
Interesting topic! Gatrasz probably wrote everything, so to the list of aircraft he mentioned, I would add only a Vickers Warwick Mark V airplane.

Wellington GR.Mk.XIV:

But that just begs the question as to whether or not we need a Vickers Warwick......(of course we do).
