Spiky clouds
« on: January 20, 2018, 10:07:38 AM »

Got my new tower up and running, and it - rather, the Intel 3.9 GHz CPU - has done wonders for my frame rate. The not so good news is this:

I've seen at least one illustrated discussion of spiky clouds somewhere on SAS, but I am not now finding this. Could anyone tell me, please, is there a way to remove the spikes from the clouds?

Post your conf.ini +  type of graphics card you're using.

Ah... and all lines of error log will help a bit more.

This will not show up in the error log. It's probably Hardwareshaders=0 in [OpenGL] section.

Definitely I don't think it is some that would appear in the error log.
I guess it is a bad configuration of the graphic card. Sorry I cannot help you very much, everytime I have to re-configure my graphic card it is a pain in the neck.
Try to have a look at your graphic card panel control. In my old computer, clouds always showed those ugly peaks. When I got a better laptop with a NVIDIA card, clouds began to show as they should. However, I had to configure the graphic card specifically for IL-2. There, it was an option to force IL-2 to use the NVIDIA graphic processor instead of integred graphics.

Find out what your graphic card is and try to fiddle with it. You can also check water reflections. I only get water=4 if my graphic card is correctly configured.

The image looks exactly like what IL-2 looks when you play it in OpenGL mode on Intel's CPU-integrated Intel HD graphics.
So the question to EHood is: Does your PC have a dedicated graphics card? If so, make sure to use it. If not, use DirectX mode. A Forum search with "IntelHD" and/or "DirectX" will show threads where others have been in the very same situation.

Cheers!

Thanks all. Storebror - I was afraid of that: the new tower has an Intel CPU and Intel HD graphics. It is possible to eliminate the spiky clouds by selecting "No Clouds" in the Video Options menu. This leaves the cirrus/cirro-cumulous cloud masses at higher altitudes, and they look fine. It'll be interesting to see what happens with missions set in snow- or thunderstorms.

The good news, again, is that - so far, at least -  I've encountered no frame rate problems in any BAT module, including WAW. To me, that alone is worth the trade-off.

I also have a stock, 4.13.4 version of Il-2 on my hard drive. In that version, all of the clouds look alright, even the white, fluffy, near-range specimens.

As always, with much gratitude.  8)

I fixed this by switching from OpenGL to DirectX.
